planting cucumbers and squash.

Waynesville, NC

My neighbor says if I plant cucumbers and squash in the same bed they will cross pollinate causing the fruits to taste like each other is this true or just a wise tell or something.

This is false. The only problem you will have is if you plan on saving seeds and even than I'm not sure if squash and cukes will cross-polinate. I've read conflicting reports. But, as for the fruits themselves, you'll have no problems.

Squash and cucumbers are different species, and will not cross.

Thankyou.

Different kinds of cukes will cross pollinate. I planted pickling cukes and lemon cukes in the same garden. They both looked weird (but tasted normal) . Won't do that again!

Yellow squash and zucchini will cross with pumpkin. I made that mistake, too. But didn't find out until the following year. I saved pumpkin seeds and planted them, hoping to get pumpkins for Halloween. I got huge, tough squash and zucchini. I cooked them and made casseroles that were very good, but was disappointed that I had no pumpkins for Halloween.

milesdt-When you say X pollinate with the lemon and pickling cukes are you saying you noticed it by the appearance of the fruit the first year? Ive always been told you wont notice it in the first generation of fruit, but in the seeds for the next generation (as you posted above). BUT I have seen it in the first generation but gave up arguing about it....Did you pickle them? Hehe

Nope, sorry, didn't make any pickles! If I had, I would have the proof that you're looking for, right?

The pickling cukes were green, but their shape was oval instead of elongated. The lemon cukes were oval, but were greenish-yellow instead of lemon yellow. But everything tasted great!

My neighbor's zukes and yellow squash crossed and the fruit showed it that season, but since it "cant" happen. We were told that the original seeds were a product of a cross and that was why the fruit looked the way it did. However, that didnt explain why only some of the fruit showed it and only later in the season.

we began eating our cukes a few days ago and ohh la la I'm in heaven! I really love the Sugar Crunch, they might be small but they are so sweet and tender, and make awesome pickles!

It doesn't work that way.

If you breed a female Poodle with a Cocker Spaniel is she going to start growing long straight hair instead of poodle hair when she is pregnant?

What ever was forcing the zukes to yellow or the yellow quash to green was environmental.

I know, that's why I said above I wasnt going to argue about it. : 0 Its just nice when other people report the same anomaly. Ive heard/read about it other times too. There was actually a whole thread about it. But I realize it doesnt work that way. lol
