Can anyone help me identify this tree? I just moved in and I want to save it but I need to know what it is to help it. Any tips are greatly appreciated. I assume the black bark and dead looking trunk is a bad sign but I hope to save it.
thanks!
Please help identify this tree in Phoenix AZ
You might try posting on the Plant ID forum, someone there will probably ID it for you quickly. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/plantid/all/
Cud... possibly looks like an ash tree. Many areas of the country it was over planted and has thus caused problems. Many became dieased and had to be removed (green ash), the purple leaf ash is spose to be better. The one in the pix is in rather sad shape, the bark is missing on most of one side, not sure it will make it. Give your local county extention office a call ( listed in govment pages), ask if they might inspect it for you and give ideas on how to save it, if it's possible! Make sure to ask if it needs replacing what they might suggest for your area.
Probably wrong but, looks like one of the Elderberry's as the dried berries are still visible (I think) and the leaves are reminding me of the new tender leaves before the berries are formed.
Whatever it is, the tree really is in desperate need of TLC and would ask IF it has been fire burned at any stage, for sure it is not a young tree as the bark that is there is older. My best bet would be to dig a couple of holes away from the trunk but where the roots are and sink several plastic drinks containers into the holes, you put the bottles into the holes bottom up, remove the bottoms first, then back fill the holes, as you water, you fill the bottles up and may have to refill them several time to give this tree some feed and water at the roots where it is really needed, once you see the tree slowly recover, you can reduce the watering, alter the feeding etc and maybe the tree will stand proud again and thank you,, right now I must be fighting for it's life,
I honestly feel you will be able to rescue the tree IF you really wish to but whether the tree can last long enough to come through the rescue remains to be seen, I hope it's possible.wish you best of luck and also with the identifying the tree also. WeeNel.

Those are dried ash (Fraxinus) flowers.
Thanks Altagardener, was hoping someone could do better than I did as there is nothing worse than NOT knowing, good for you and well done, Hope cudalord gets a good result for her rescue tree. Have a great garden season. Weenel.
