Lavandula stoechas

London, United Kingdom

Hello friends,

I have a Lavandula stoechas (Lavender) that had beautiful flowers, but for the past week or so those flowers have been losing its vibrant color and getting very light pink nearly white. Should I just prune the whole plant, and that is what the discoloration means, or is some other problem?

I keep it outside facing East sun and am careful not to overwater.

Thanks in advance for your advice and help.

It would help if you could post some pictures, but flowers do fade naturally with time so it could be that the flowers are just finishing up. If the flowers are finished, you can trim the plant and it should bloom again after a little while.

Hi Josh, your so lucky to have a Lavender outside he in UK and in March. Anyway, I would;d think the plant has finished flowering for now, so with scissors or secateurs, snip off the flowering stems, cut back all the plant BUT, don't cut into the hard wood, that is the part of the stems where the stem is more woody, just cut away till you see soft Grey/greenish leaves etc. IF you cut into the hard wood (brown) it is less likely the plant will be able to regrow from that bit of the plant.
After pruning lavender in a pot, I usually replant into a larger pot with good compost and I add some fine grit to this as Lavenders don't like rich wet soil.
You are right never to over water the lavender but as the weather gets brighter, move the plant into the light and you may need to water a little more often, to tell if water is required, stick your finger into the soil, if dry, water, if still damp, don't give water.

By the way, your lavender is one of the French lavenders and usually flower between May to July, it can grow to about 18-20 inches high and same wide so be careful the plant cant be blown over in a strong breeze.
Good Luck, WeeNel.
