3 years ago I planted a blueberry bush in a pot. It did ok the first year, but the second year it struggled. I planted two more in pots and they are all doing terribly. Our neighbor has a huge black walnut tree that I'm wondering about, as I've read they can impede the growth of other plants? Also, I know blueberry bushes like acidic soil of 4.0-6.0 I tested the soil and it is 6.5. Do you think I just need to make the soil more acidic for them to thrive? If so, how do I do that?
Blueberry bushes
I use Espoma's Soil Acidifier for my blueberries. Just follow the directions on the package being careful to not try to adjust the pH down too quickly.
If your blueberry plants are within the root zone or canopy of the black walnut tree, they won't survive. Walnut tree roots, nuts, and bark contaminate the soil with juglone, a plant-respiration inhibitor, and black walnut trees produce more juglone than other varieties. Consider placing your berries in containers or move them to a different area away from the walnut tree. Be careful not to damage their shallow roots when you move them. Even so, squirrels often like to "plant" walnuts, so watch out for suspicious sprouts and remove them quickly.
I have a two year old emerald blueberry plant that has sent out a shoot with much larger leaves. Are blueberries grown on thier own rooststock or are they grafted?
Arobin, Most all blueberries are propagated by rooted cutting or tissue culture. The new growth that your plant is sending out should be sign that it is "happy" were it is and ready to grow. The larger leaves would be a sign that it nutrients are being met and the plant is developing to it full potential. Keep doing what you have been with it.
