Weed burners

Maywood Park, OR

I am considering purchase of a propane weed burner. I am wondering if anyone has used this item and if it successfully removed weeds on a permanent basis?? I am wondering how well these devices kill off those weeds with deep tap roots like dandelions.

Bought the one from Harbor Freight, was on sale for $29, with the piezoelectric starter. Use it to start wood smoker for cooking brisket, along the fence line to help with weeds, and have had decent luck.

I don't think you're going to kill weeds permanently with the burner, but it makes fairly quick work of them. We had a lot of dandelions this year and will start working on getting rid of those once this current rain storms pass.

It is not a permanent fix especially on the perennial weeds.

Hi David, everyone is right when they say this equipment is NOT a permanent weed killer, for a start, weeds continually shed there seeds, thats how the species survive. We Garden with one of the industrial size, it comes either on wheels or is carried like a weed cutter (strimmer), we use it as we have a very long winding driveway and closer to the house we have large areas of gravel, there is no way we could keep these areas clear and tidy without the weed burner, it does a good large area before it requires refilling with petrol, but believe me, these are not for the faint hearted as they will burn everything from fencing to wood that makes my raised beds, if your not careful you can walk away and leave some areas smoldering so you need to use all your concentration AND have a metal hand shield so you can protect some plants that as you burn weeds close to, the flames shoot up-wards and burn leaves, branches and they don't always recover, ask my husband to show his black Eye's ha, ha, ha.

Seriously David, if you have more than a postage stamp to weed, one of those little fairy wand burners don't have the force of flame to burn lots of weeds or stuff like Brambles, Docken weeds etc that grow huge long tap roots, I would say we have our burner out no more than 3 times a year, we never have to resort to weedkiller's, a large area can be cleared of weeds within an hour, the idea is that once you make a place clear from weeds, you don't let them regrow back to more than an inch tall or you are more or less starting all over again.
Don't let anyone tell you it KILLS all weeds, it does not, it removes the green top and continual burning helps eventually kill off the perennial weeds as they cant grow without the foliage to take the sun, rain etc down to the food store (root) what is good, it saves back ache from bending down to hand weed, rake or hoe, it makes light work of small or large areas, it's quicker IF the weather is dry and the greenery has no water on it, BUT you have to look out for wild life as my DH cooked a couple of frogs/toads to a frazzle and I really was upset about that as they eat all our garden foe's like slugs, snails etc, anyway David, go to the hardware store and pick up the burners in your hand, get a feel for the size you want and please take good care when you use it, protective clothes and shields etc at all times.
Good luck, WeeNel.
