I have ordered several plants that are shipping as bare roots. How big do these usually grow in the first year? Will I get blooms? Should I get them shipped now so I can start them indoors?
Growing plants from roots
It all depends on what plants you ordered. What did you get?
Rozanne Geranium
Dark Tower Penstemon
Picotte Begonia
When you do receive them, soak the roots in water for about 24 hours to help them rehydrate before planting.
All those plants should be potted up as soon as possible after you receive them and gave them a good look over, my way of doing these type of plants is to put them into say a 4-6 inch pots filled with good quality potting compost or multi-purpose compost both shop bought, place the pots onto a 2-3 inch deep try and fill the tray up with coolish water (i like my filled watering can to be sat beside my indoor plants to make sure they are at the same temp) and also my compost, so I get this ready the night before I intend to use the compost / water etc.
After the compost in the pot has soaked up enough water (the soil turns a darker colour) lift the pots out the tray and set the pots aside to drain, then give the plants good light, not direct sunlight in-doors, but after a week you should See darker green shoots showing, keep them in the pots till they have made enough new roots to give them a good base for being placed outside early summer where they are to flower. Don't give them any feed till the plants have enough top growth to need it and this will also be when there is enough roots to take up the feed, I use HALF strength feed to start with but to be honest, any GOOD quality compost usually has all the nutrients a plant will need for a good few weeks if at it needs it.
Best of luck. WeeNel.
