I recently moved to an area about 20 mile south of Myrtle Beach, SC and 10 miles from the ocean. In past homes, mostly in the central Midwest, I have always enjoyed the wonderful yellow fall color of Ginkgo Biloba trees. Does anyone know if I will have any luck growing them here. I learned long ago that the fact the local nurseries may carry something has little to no bearing as to whether or not it will actually grow well in the local conditions. In addition, if I dig down more than about 3 feet, I hit a clay mixture that is locally referred to as "gumbo". If gumbo was a little softer, easier to mix and drained water a little better, we would have called it concrete back home.
So I guess my question is two fold: First, will the Ginkgo Biloba Tree grow here successfully? And secondly, does anyone know know what I can do about the "Gumbo? I am willing to dig a hole ten feet wide and ten feet deep. I just don't want for the tree to do well for two or three years only to die during years four and five. Any and all thoughts and suggestions will be most greatly appreciated.

Gingko Biloba Trees.
Perhaps this may help a bit. i am not sure your proximity to Sumter, but I did find this interesting.
The world's largest plantation of Ginkgo trees is in Sumter, South Carolina, consisting of 400 ha of sandy soil with millions of trees planted 40 inches apart (about 25,000 trees per ha). They are kept shrub-sized. The gathering of the leaves starts mid-July when the leaves are still green. Every 5 years the trees are cut down to the ground!
Hi DogDad,
Here is a link that should answer your question about these lovely trees. I used to have one on my parkway, living in the city, in the midwest and truly enjoyed it. So, perhaps this link will help you:

I'm not sure if the link will work right here, so you may have to copy/paste it in your address window of your browser.
Good luck!
