Why Lucky bamboo is getting brown?

Toronto, Canada

Hi! I am a brand new of this type of forum.
I have had this lucky bamboo for 1 & half years almost. But now this one just getting brown or dying from the top. Some leaves is still alive though. I though it would be ok or normal, but now I see it would die eventually.
I want to know how I can save its life. Does it required sunlight?
Your help would be appreciated.

When they are kept in water, the nutrients are depleted quickly and need to be replenished. Have you been feeding it? And yes, it could do with a bit of sun. Someone will be along to give more info.

What type of feeding U meant? Thanks.

Diluted houseplant fertilizer would be best. I used one tenth strength every time I changed the water.

kwanjin,

Now is there any way I can save it now? Shall I put that fertilizer in the water? If so, where can I buy it from?
Thanks.

Yes, put it in the water. It can be purchased anywhere plants are sold.

Milwaukee, WI

How often do you change the water for these plants?

Anacortes, WA

First off, your lucky bamboo is not a bamboo at all but a Dracaena sanderana. Having the botanical name will help you google all sorts of links that can give you aid.
http://houseplants.about.com/od/typesofhouseplants/a/LuckyBamboo.htm is one I found.

Having said that... The tiny bit of new growth at the very top of the dead part... cut it off with a sharp knife taking a bit of the dead part with it. Plant it in regular potting soil in an appropriate sized pot. They are hard to kill and it should do fine, As was said above it's hard to live on water alone.

As an expierment - cut off the brown part and toss it. cut the green stems in 2 or 3 sections, dip the bottom end in rooting compound and plant them in a pot. I'll bet new tops will grow. good luck...barb
