I want to grow lettuce, broccoli and kale this summer when should I plant the seeds indoors? Live in Zone 5..
Has anyone begun theirs yet?
Zone 5 starting vegs.
Kale is probably the hardiest of all the veggies so you could start them now. I don't think you'll have a problem starting broccoli but I would only start a few now and successively over the next few weeks.
When its time to put them out, keep an eye on the forecast and use row covers (or bed sheets) on nights when the temp may dip to the low 20's.
I'm starting a few lettuce this week but only because the extended forecast in Ohio is calling for an extremely mild (but wet) early spring.
Lettuce isn't as hardy as the cole crops (cabbage, kale, broccoli) but they do well under row covers.
I guess my advice would be to start some now than wait a couple weeks to start the rest. This way all your eggs aren't in one basket.
