Topping off asparagus patch

My asparagus patch is in it's third year, so I'm hoping for some actual eating spears this time around. My current question has to do with the bed. I'd like to make the soil deeper, as it seems to have settled below the rest of the garden. If I add more potting soil now, will it prevent the spears from growing? My feeling is no, as nothing is showing yet, but I don't want to smother them when I'll finally be able to harvest....
