New to gardening and trying to find a good plant

Dahlonega, GA

I'm new to gardening, but I want to find a good indoor plant for my apartment. I was thinking about a Jade plant or African Violet. Would either of these be a good indoor plant? Also how do I find where to buy them at?

The type of plant you can grow in your apartment depends on the conditions you have. What type of light do you get in your various windows--north, east, west, south exposure? Also, what is the general temperature of your apartment? Let us know and then we can give you some ideas.

I agree with NatureLover1950, the kind of light you have available determines what plants you will have success with. Tell us more about your light situation!

I suggest Mother-In- Law Tongues. They will grow anywhere anytime. Just don't water them much.

Cornplant http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/54287/ is an easy plant to start out with and they offer it in a small size to very large. I'd only go with a Jade plant if it is sunny. African Violets are good for an east window. Also take a look through the articles - here's one: http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/638/

I am a strong believer in pothos being good for anyone who wants to grow plants. It is hard to kill and as long as u can see the leaves, they will tell you by "droop level" if its time for water. I have even grown these babies IN water!

Another good one is bamboo. It grows in plain ole water in indirect lighting. Can't go wrong there! My sister has such bad black thumbs, it climbs to her elbows and she can grow bamboo...

If you have a Lowes or Home Depot, They usually have a potplant or two around. Also look for a local nursery for plants. If worse comes to worse and nothing around.try growing a pineapple top from supermarket. Walmarts also has container plants around. Good luck and let us know how you do.
