What are these sprouts growing in my new lawn?

Pakenham, Australia

Hey guys,

Maybe a funny question asking about sprouts growing in new lawn - but we have just begin to notice there are two kinds of sprouts appearing.

The lawn seed we are using is called RTF (Rhizomatous Tall Fescue), and as far as i know... the seed was not a blend/mix - only RTF.

I have attached a couple of images showing the two different types of sprouts which are popping up. One type has a long, slender leaf - which im guessing is the RTF. The other sprout has a couple of round, thick leaves. Which im not sure what they are - hopefully not weeds.

I appreciate any help.

Cheers.

I tend to suspect weed, but you might keep an eye on things for a little bit longer. I don't have much grass experience (first thing I did when I moved here was rip the lawn out), but with other plants the seed leaves (the first ones that show up when the plant sprouts) will look different than the plant's true leaves. However, I don't believe that the seed leaves of a grass would be round like that, so while I don't think you will be able to tell what you have until those seedlings get their first true leaves (if not later), I don't think they're your grass. Which probably means it's a weed of some sort.

thanks for the reply ecrane3.

Ill give them a chance to develop and then ill submit some more photos.

Hopefully there is a good herbicide which will be able to deal with the weeds, but not harm the RTF.

thanks again.

Over here they sell lawn weed killers that will kill weeds but leave the grass alone, I assume you probably have something similar in Australia.

im pretty sure there will be something available - just depends on what type of weeds they turn out to be - if they are indeed weeds.

thanks again.

the one with the rounded leaves almost looks like speedwell or chickweed hard to tell by only 1 set of leaves though
