Spending spree #10

Dandelions? that is really interesting..Wonder if they are just planting them in a container cause all you have to do is not fertilize and pretty soon your yard will be covered in them

Montpelier, VT

So nice to "morning-smile" @ all you folks recent Northeast remarks, catalog orders & 2012 dreams of upcoming garden plans. ON A MISSION this AM to find a certain Bearded Iris. Hope you folks can help.

It's the reddest of RED I've ever seen and is called, "Red at Night." (Getting me thru, even this brown-ish winter of a couple of decades, I dig out my past issues of Garden How to, Garden Gate, Birds & Blooms. 2 days ago, in the back of a 2009 Garden Gate mag. was a life-size photo of the this Iris. (Blew me away!) Two nurseries were listed. High Country Gardens in NM was 2nd one listed - been there, done that, but they don't carry it anymore.

The 1st listed was Cooley's Garden's from Oregon. After hrs. of researching (how & why no web site for Cooleys) a March 2011 news article from same town came up stating that Cooley's was cobbling their last season together by wife & sisters due to unexpected demise of 57 yr. old hubby last yr. A well known hybridizing who spent yrs. trying to create the perfect red Iris. (And he sure did!) I've had this (now) only elder computer just smokin' to find some place in this country, even local, that still owns, or grows this Iris.

Thanx for listening to my rare online, but always w/ tons of blather.

Thomaston, CT

It's a beauty....sorry to hear that Cooley's will no longer be around......

I want to make a very colorful hedge between the old house and the new house. It will be on top of the knoll so that when the wind blows i'll be down wind for the smell. ^_^
I bought 2 of each.......

Thomaston, CT

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Today I found the polyfoam covering needed for tender shrubs, ie. the camellias that will be coming this spring rom mailorder. The product was at Russells Garden shop. Name was "Harvest Guard." The store buyer talked to me about camellias. Like other nurseries, they just want to know how successful they are in this region before they carry them.

Received White Flower Farm catalog today...DROOL.... saw lots of REALLY nice stuff

South Hamilton, MA

They had the bleeding hearts that I want. I know other places have them but I want to keep catalogs down & I know that they have changed hands, but I don't want to start new co if I don't have to.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

received one here too - actually got several some for the third time this spring - white farm was for the second, nice pictures in that catalog although they have really reduced tree/shrub's and gone into more flowers

Thomaston, CT

I didn't order much from them this year....prices are sky-high! But I did get the North Hill Strain of primroses....

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I got all yesterday.....
High Country
White Flower
Brecks
Wayside
Audubon
Doctors Foster & Smith Ponds

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

only one i did not get was wayside - that came a couple weeks ago for the second time - also got several others - brecks seems to have a "new" special every week.

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Local garden centers are getting ready to open for spring. Some have signs saying open in March--but not yet! Two of my kids have applied for jobs in the big one with lots of branches. Other DD is holding out for Starbucks or Peet's coffee.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

do they get discounts? :)

Thomaston, CT

Right....I'd make sure they chose the garden centers!

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

I believe there would be discounts, but if they work in the same nursery, I doubt there could be double discounts! Then just form a line with your cars, and we'll see if there's a limit to the discount. ;)

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Hahaha. That would be a sight, wouldn't it? We could only hope.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

which town is this nursery located in?

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Is it bad I'm already planning my bulb order for fall????

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Not at all, Jen!!!

Thomaston, CT

No, Jen....I'm already to buy a few more reticulated iris!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

hee hee

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I am thinking about bulbs too since I see the empty spots.

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Well, they applied to Mahoney's in Concord, but they may interview in Winchester. Bill and Iris wouldn't have to drive too far for a tailgate party!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i would be happy to accept any discounts they could pass on :)

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

So YOU tell them to set up the next interview LOL

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Victor: me toooo. I want tulips and will mark where as soon as the rest of my bulbs are up. It seems in fall there isnt any room.
