Spending spree #10

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Unless you have bee's indoors...it is not self pollinating. You need the bees to pollinate the plant.
Unless you have 2 plants and make sure the flowers touch...then you would have pollination w/out the bee's. Or you could use a q-tip and try mimicking the bee's. :)

And that's why there are several bee hives on the farm where my son lives!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Just ordered some caladiums. 3 of us went in together. If you have started them inside did you cover them completely or just the bottom? It's hard to wait til it gets to be July before they really shine.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

cover them completely, Jan, but doesn't have to be deep at all, I used a shallow litter box(bargain at Big Lots)

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Thanks, Jen

Thomaston, CT

My stepdaughter sent me Garden Gate magazine & this month had an article on planting caladiums....they used a shallow pan as well.....

New Hampshire, NH(Zone 5b)

Just got two Orchids at the Nashua Orchid show. I don't know why I keep trying. I always seem to kill them!

Thomaston, CT

They are beautiful, though!

DINNER PLATE DAHLIA 'SANTA CLAUS' (RED/WHITE)
DINNER PLATE DAHLIA 'THE BIG WOW' (RED)

Thomaston, CT

They will stand out in the garden for sure.....I'm looking at more penstemon, but don't really want to spend any more....would love one of those patio greenhouses!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Did some more damage there. Even trying dahlias for the first time.

Thomaston, CT

Love dahlias....they need sun, and staking, but are just gorgeous flowers.....if you cut them to bring them into a vase, put the cut stems in water that is very hot...it will set the petals....

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, normally anything that requires staking doesn't make it for me, but I must be getting old.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I stick with short dahlias .. for my containers.. no staking needed

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

My splurge was a glass vase at Marshalls. Michael Aram for Waterford. Short and stout enough to display the short peony blossoms. There was a happy newlywed at the first TJX store I went to, gathering up the Waterford vases that she couldn't afford on her gift list. I wished her well, and found mine the next day at a different store.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Victor you are going to love the Dahlias. I ordered cannas from them earlier and forgot, almost reordered them. I never got my Dahlias dug in the fall may have to get some new ones!

Thomaston, CT

Same here...had to order new ones, but I do every year because they don't keep over the winter for me...have tried everything!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

does a $750 oil bill count as a spending spree if i am using some of it to keep the house warm to start seeds? I have to say that when that oil truck comes down the driveway you almost want to do the cross and i am not even catholic!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

How long will that heat the house?

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Was going to ask the same question

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

You can always use a space heater for the seeds.

Thomaston, CT

Mine was almost that amount, Bill.....and this has been a warm winter...hoping this tank lasts until oil prices go down again, whenever that will be....and what is maddening is to hear we have a glut of oil, the prices should be down!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

lasts about 3 months maybe a bit less

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Not too bad. Will only get worse, though.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i can't tell you how much i appreciate being reminded of that :)

Thomaston, CT

Yep, me, too!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Anyone see the CRAZY gas prices??

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, and they will only get worse.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

You are like a broken record :)

Thomaston, CT

We have very high gas taxes here in CT...in town, regular is selling for $3.81....I try to go to Torrington where it's a few cents cheaper...or save up on Stop & Shop points....I paid $3.31 a gallon a few days ago there with my points....

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

gas shot up here yesterday too.

Thomaston, CT

Went up again today...now it's $3.85!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, and it will only...

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

don't want to think about it

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

almost couldn't find the thread... but went to christmas tree shop yesterday.. bought lily bulbs, bleeding hearts (Randy's fav), a honeysuckle vine, and some sunflower seeds they had 1/2 off... made me laugh that they are selling dandelion seeds .. I know a lot of people eat them in salads.. but I could never justify growing them on purpose... picked up two more tea cups ... I am not sure if we were too late and missed the good ones.. or they were just lame this year... they had a ton of 4" real size tea cups that were planters... I passed on them... way too small for my plants.. guess they would be good for succulents though.. and were very cute

Thomaston, CT

Allison, I planted dandelion greens in my veggie garden a few times...they don't look like the ones in the yard....the leaf is much larger, broader & darker....also, no flowers! I think they were imported from Italy.....

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

these had a photo on the package

No, that's not the Italian kind, that looks like the backyard kind!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

those 4" tea cups will probably work real well in my fairy garden
