Noobee gardener first blackberry plants
I had a nice double row of Navaho thornless that did very well for a few years. What I didn't realize when I purchased them is that in the process of hybridizing them to be thornless, it made the plants susceptible to fire blight. I lost all of them just last year. They did put out huge sweet berries for the few years I had them though. They produced heavy crops too. I had them planted in full sun and fertilized them with homemade compost. I mulched them with wheat straw during the summer. I plan to get some of the ones with thorns and start over. The berries are so much bigger and sweeter than wild ones that I just can't go back to the wild type.
Yum! What does fire blight look like? These were the only blackberries I could find.

Controlling fire blight once it starts takes some effort. My blackberries were infected while I was recuperating from surgery so they were beyond saving by the time I discovered it. As stated above, the berries are so good that I'm undeterred--I plan to try again :-}
