Sago Palm - Is it giving up on me?

Auckland, New Zealand

Hi there, first time poster...

I have a large Sago in my part of the world (NZ) that was moved to its current location about 2 years ago. Since the move, no new flushes have come through and I've noticed the leaves are starting to brown. The positioning is not the best as it's shadowed by the neighbors bamboo weed! I am worried the bamboo which is very invasive has maybe killed the cycad. It doesn't have that nice tan couler around the top like many of my other plants.

Should I be worried, should I be moving it to a sunnier spot, does she need more food???

Thanks!
Brendan

Believe it or not but I can grow these prehistoric palms here in UK, I love them but they do like a fair bit of sunshine in summer (not shade) in winter I give it protection, I would imagine that most Bamboo's like a moist soil and most are very invasive as they grow by underground Rhizomes and this could be taking up any water that is given especially in summer months when the Palms are trying to grow new / more fronds / leaves.
Also it looks like you have managed to grow this plant for many years and perhaps it requires a dressing of fresh soil with added feed, like all us humans, our plants do enjoy a feed from time to time and a little tonic never hurt any of us, good luck, WeeNel.

your sago palm looks healthy especially if it's lasted two years like that. cycads don't grow very fast and generally the sagos put out a set of leaves in spring only. they might put out another set in warm climates. they grow so slowly that it is hard for me to notice the growth rate of any around here. i don't grow them in my garden. most likely it is concentrating on roots, it is possible that it is just re-establishing itself.
