Gophers and Daylilies

Santa Cruz, CA

Does anyone know if gophers do NOT eat daylilies? I have a huge number of gophers and I mostly have my daylilies in pots because of this...but I do have a few in the ground...mostly Stella d'Oros ..but mostly in one spot. Is it just chance that the gophers have not found them or are they maybe poison to rodents? I'd love to put more in the ground but sure do hate to have them provide a meal for the gophers!

The gophers haven't found my DL's yet because the DL's are in the front yard and the gophers are only in the back, but in my experience they'll munch pretty much anything unless it's strong smelling (garlic/onions/etc) or poisonous (castor bean) so to be safe I would recommend planting them in wire cages if you want them in the ground.

Thanks for answering! I was hoping that, like daffodils, they might be poisonous to gophers! I guess maybe they have just not found the ones I put in the ground, also! They HAVE been there awhile but there might be other reasons and I sure don't want to lose my new ones so....I'll keep using pots (which I usually use) or else wire baskets!
I appreciate your help!
