I did not have my winter bird visit this year, so I will be sharing my year round birds, with you.

Great shots Burn. That Dee is so darned cute. What!! No Purple Finch?? LOL
Good yard birds, burn. I don't have a lot of variety right now, but sure have numbers. Mostly goldfinches, House Finches and juncos.

The Yellow-bellied Sapsucker has moved to a Live Oak in the back yard. Wrapped it right after this shot. He drilled these holes in a couple of hours, you can imagine what he does over time. Would kill the tree, the sap just flows out of the holes.

Cold is really bringing in the Cardinals.....at one point this evening I counted 11 male Cardinals. I didn't even count the females!

GG, I have no snow shoes or Raindeer to go hunting for the Purple Finch. 8o) Aww handsome birds you have with tail or no tail.
Now,now Nanny, don't you encourage her.............. what a colorful yard you had, with all those Cardinals. Would love to have a sighting of one for my life list.

Granny, a lot time bird without tails have had them frozen to the ground, especially those that roost on the ground. Cardinals aren't ground roosters, but could have still frozen to a branch while roosting. Poor bird, the feathers will grow back, but the birds need them to maneuver in flight. We are having a mild winter, good for the birds.

Thanks Red. That is good to know. It has been super cold here and the trees and brush have been covered in frost in the mornings. I would rather think he lost his tail that way rather than having almost been caught by some critter.

Red, that shot with the bb and finches is really interesting and colorful. Love that sapsucker-wow! Sorry that it's damaging the tree, but it's such a beautiful bird.

I just got back from a birding trip to the Rio Grande Valley in far south Texas. We saw 94 species with a few more to identify. I'll post a few pics of some highlight birds.
The first is a Brown Jay. It's a review species in Texas that hadn't been seen in about 5 years. We saw it at Salineno, TX on 1/16/2012.

Nanny, I highly recommend it. It is very easily accessible and doesn't require a lot of walking, if you don't want to. They have trams that run frequently and go to different stops in the park. You could spend over a week there and not see all the birding sites within 1.5 hours of Mission. Lots of great fresh citrus and Mexican food, too!

Hey critterologist, I would love to make one of those feeders, but I have no way to keep the tree rats out of them, we have trees all around our house and the only way to keep them out of the feeder is to either have the upside down suet feeder and a wire screen around the round feeder. I guess I could find a way to put a wire screen around the log so only the woodpeckers can get it, I would have to really consider where to hang it, I might be able to hang it on the side of the tree in front, if I can fix it so the squirrels can't get to it. I have crunchy peanut butter that I got specially for the woodpeckers, and I am itching to use it. The crushed red pepper flakes works but not too well. I can try to put the peanut butter in really deep so they can't get to it, how does that sound? Any advice would be appreciated.
