I was a wreck all day waiting to hear where these Marines were from since my nephew is currently over there
Praying for their families
Coffee Break #72
Yes, that was terrible. French soldiers were killed too - by an Afghan soldier!
Well, you can lead a horse to water...

well really what do you expect when serving this to kids "quinoa salads and brown rice cutlets"
....DUH!!!!!!!!!!
You can make kid friendly meals healthy....from 1 extreme to the other, what a bunch of dopes!
Ok for example kids love hot dogs....don't serve the ones that are loaded with nitrates and chemicals but don't try going to the meatless tofu hotdog or turkey dog. You can get organic all beef with no nitrates....
UGH is this really so difficult??????
chicken nuggets don't buy the processed pureed all chicken parts nuggets buy the ones that are a full cut of chicken and when you cut into it, it actually looks like chicken
give them carrots/celery/cucumbers in addition to all natural potato chips/corn chips....my kids will eat both
Well this is California we are talking about. Different galaxy altogether.
that must be it, sun has fried their brains
AHEM! Native Southern Californian in the house! I looked at the comments on the article and it seems like there may be a union issue involved here as well as the food. Remember that the writer of the article needs comments posted to show his bosses that people are reading his material and that leads to advertising revenue. I didn't see any footnotes on the article so I could check the writers sources.
I watched some of Jamie's shows and it wasn't about rice cutlets and tofu hot dogs at all. (Not that he is perfect - he just got "honored" with the MOST UNHEALTHY COOKBOOK for 2011! Which includes an 1100+ calorie hamburger recipe.) From his shows I gleaned that the USDA is selling food too cheaply to the schools for them to resist and the food is the very stuff that is causing the health problems we see in children and now in adults - the chicken nuggets, processed cheese food and so forth. So the USDA is part of the cause of the escalating health care costs! We just keep biting ourselves in the butt - so to speak. (Pun intended.)
Southern California IS a culture of it's own - that is true. :) While there are the very rich in Newport Beach, Beverly Hills, etc. The majority of the people are immigrant with a high concentration of illegals and very, very poor. The economy of So Cal really runs on illegal labor - whether it is admitted, or not.
I work at a hospital , and the cafeteria is just starting to prepare more healthy food!
I watched a segment on C B S Tom Valenti cook book for diabetics. It looked pretty good.
memory you made me smile :)
The expression on the owlet that's being petted is priceless.....as a teacher who spent may days on cafeteria duty, please! The food served today is sooo much better than what was served in the 60's.....salad, yogurt, bagels are always offered.....unlike the days of creamed tuna on toast, or shepherd's pie that had grey mystery meat on top! Pixie, I'm jealous of that flower!
I'm enjoying my "Saturday morning reading" on this thread, but I turned my brain off last night, so I only understand parts of it!
yeah Celeste!!!
Always brought my lunch to school in HS. Went home for lunch in ES.
Yes, our elementary school was locked from 12:00 to 1:30...everyone had to go home....no one home at my house, so I learned how to take care of myself fast....
I am glad you like it!!!
Just finished shoveling with my son. Pooped! I got one of those huge Sno-Bosses. Very big and wide. Speeds things up but much more effort.
Had two incidents around here in the past few days with men in cars trying to get school kids to come with them. One asked for help finding his dog. Luckily, both kids were smart and got away quickly. Sickening.
If found, they should be shot on the spot.
Terrible local tragedy with two Marist female students and a male friend dying in a (rented) house fire this AM.
I agree, roses - only shooting is too easy. They need to suffer.
Did you hear that a school wanted to name their mascot and teams Cougars, but the school nixed the idea because it might be considered offensive to cougar women! Incredible.
I'm sorry to hear the bad news, but just got back from my son's wedding and have a beautiful new DIL!
We had a great time, and I can't believe It's over already.
that is great debi - congrats!
Congrats!
that's so nice!
Thanks all!
Congrats Debi!
So fulfilling to watch the family grow!
Congrats Debi!
Congratulations!
Thanks everyone.
David and Lindsey have been friends since 8th grade when she passed him a note on the bus on their DC field trip saying she liked him. Even though they've liked each other since then, they didn't start dating until they were 20, and they'll both be 26 this year.
I couldn't ask for better kids.
Great to hear all went well, Deb! Please gibe them my congrats and best wishes.
So glad for you, Debi....best wishes for both your children, since you now have a daughter! Victor, scary report of men trying to abduct kids....you hate to frighten your own kids, but they have to hear it to stay safe.....
Thanks Robin and Victor, I sure will tell them.
debi_k :
Thanks for sharing your family's joy; the nightly news on tv/internet can be daunting, and just plain sad, so THANK YOU for a slice of happiness, to give us hope for the future!
3 people lost their lives on snowmobiles this weekend here in Maine. Every year I ask myself ........
"WHAT WERE THEY THINKING!!!". Out of the 3 the one that always perplexes me is the one who dies trying to cross a lake. Every freakin year some idiot temps the ice on the lake and loses....I personally think it out to be band and if you don't die you should get fined just for trying!!!!
Celeste, my BILs cousin was killed in a snowmobile accident Sat night, he lost control and was hit by a second one. He was 56.
Maybe a sign that says how many haven't made it across would deter. There is a sign like that at a waterfall in VT.
