Hi friends I usually grow small edible plants like fenugreek in Asbestos sheets as shown (looks like a seedbed isn't it).
I wanted to know if this method is safe.
Asbestos sheet for small plants safet
If it is truly asbestos then no. Once asbestos powders and becomes airborne, it is very harmful to the lungs causing asbestosis. While what you are doing with it means it is wet and shouldn't become a dust I still wouldn't want to play around with it. In this country asbestos insulation is removed by wetting it down, removing it and then double bagging it. All this is done while wearing a complete hazmat suit complete with respirator.
The way to tell if it's truly asbestos is to get a dry piece and put a flame to it. If it melts or burns then it's 'Rock Wool'. Rock Wool is used often by gardeners.
I doubt unless you have had this for a long time that it is asbestos.
Let us know. Even rock wool wont burn wet.
I'm not sure that asbestos is banned in India--for someone gardening in the US it's highly unlikely it would really be asbestos, but in other parts of the world that's not necessarily the case.
Well, let's hope I'm correct. Although planting in asbestos would not actually affect any plant as it doesn't leach asbestos. It would be similar to rock wool.
I would however suggest great caution be used when handling it.
1. Keep children away while handling.
2. Be very gentile as to limit any airborne particles.
3. In leu of a respirator, tie a damp cloth over nose and mouth.
4. Remove and wash clothes away from other family laundry.
I missed the burraganesh's location in my first post.
From what I gather, both asbestos and asbestos free corrugated roofing is available in Hyderabad.
