Why are avocado trees so hard to grow to bear fruit. I guess anyone in Calif. can grow one, but in Texas, it seems imposible. Why?
Avocado trees
Well I don't know why avocados in Texas are difficult to grow, but I do know that the variety 'Day' avocado is supposedly quite easy to grow and bear fruit, especially in a container. Only takes 2-3 years to start bearing, and is somewhat cold hardy. You can buy it here;

The reason avocado trees grow well in California and not in Texas is because avocado trees love Mediterranean climate, which limits them to California's central and south coasts. California provides the perfect conditions that Texas doesn't produce, so this is the answer to your question. Also to get an avocado tree to produce fruit, it usually needs to be grafted.

When I was almost 5, my grandfather helped me plant an avocado seed in our rental backyard in Miami. The next year he dug it up for his new house, and when I returned 10 years later, it was bearing heavily. No graft.
