Is The Garden Layout a Good Idea?

Spiro, OK(Zone 7a)

I have a few things to contend with here in OK. Deer, raccoons, possums, gophers and voles for starters. Then the myriad of insect pests. And draught. Oh the draught.

I'm thinking of trying this: 39 straw bales in a square outline with one missing for a gate space. Grow tomatoes and peppers in the straw bales to keep them up and in the sun and to create a barrier that deer won't be interested in eating. Perhaps even put up some deer fencing around the outside if necessary. Then, the interior of the garden could be all of the stuff that doesn't require full sun - shade plants in the areas closer to the edges that get the most shade, etc. It will be small enough to water by hand. Insects I'll combat with organics and companion planting.

Thoughts? Recommendations?

Wow Interesting idea.
I don't think the complex i live in would let me keep hay bales on my patio thou.

Hate to mention, but the deer love the straw that is gathered for those bales, they are like cows, they munch on it when there food is hard to get at. good luck. WeeNel.
