last season i did all my starters in plastic containers (i.e. yogurt, sour cream, milk jugs, etc.) and they seemed to do just fine. today i read that it is a bad idea. i have tried researching this topic on the web but haven't really found any info. any thoughts????
planting in plastic containers
Hi Mitch, the only comment I can give is, there are many, many containers that people recycle for seed germination and planting, my truthful comment would be, use whatever works for you, why would you throw away perfectly re-usable plastic pots / containers to go replace them with " more plastic flower pot /containers" I say re-use them again and again so long as you wash them out after each use, there are some types of plastic that has been used for say, harsh household cleaning products and things like that, I would not re-use, but in general and using common sense what is the problem ?????.
If you save, as I do the flower pots that I have purchased plants in, then what is wrong with other plastic pots, I have to admit, I am looking forward to any other gardeners who think this is wrong and the reasons why.
As always, if it works for you, then why stop doing it.
Good luck and happy re-cycling. WeeNel.
If you have well draining soil with drain holes there is no reason not to use plastic pots/containers at all. IMHO of coarse!
Merry Christmas to all!
i figured it would be okay since i already did it and it worked out great. i am an enviro-phile so i am constantly trying to re-use everything and wanted to make an example out of doing this. didn't want to set a bad example cause i didn't do my research!! i will definitely post if i find out some info on this
milk jug plastic may not last but a year before it gets brittle-decomposes, destroy before it does so pieces arent in your soil?
