Alligator Flag (Fire Flag) planting with seeds

Hi there, can alligator flag seeds be sown by just throwing them into a pond? Also, how do I know when the seeds are ready to be picked?

if there is a pod, it should start to open and you can gather the seeds then. i would sow seeds along the bank of the pond-not out into the water.
