Fun with annuals

Palmdale, CA(Zone 8a)

My favorites of the annuals are Marigold, Pansies, Petunia, and cosmos. I always use them in containers with ferns and bulbs.I would like to know what ideas other gardeners have come up with to make their annuals shine.

I have about 40 containers of Daylillys. I plant Zennias, petunias, coleus, and marigolds in the pots with my daylillys. I have Hostas in ground and i add a few of the above annuals in them also.

Cando1 can you eat your annuals.?

Palmdale, CA(Zone 8a)

I am planning on bringing petunias inside because they are tropical. That means they are tender perennials.

LOL eweed! Guess I should have added I also grow green onions, tomatoes, cukes, radishes and herbs in containers. Tomatoes do not do as well and I'm going to try to grow some in ground this year.

Cando one thing you need right is pot size if you are to have real good luck with growing tomatoes in containers, Then the next thing I wonder about is soil temp? Only you know how hot it got in your pot. Did you water well?

I like to use annual in containers by themselves, but I'm also experimenting mixing some ornamentals in with my veggies.

Here's a containers I did last year with a dwarf tomato, pepper, some basil and nasturtium.

My containers are 5 gal and plus.I fertilized with Miracle Grow. They did bear some but did much better in ground. They were watered faithfully.
Loved your picture Mom to Goldens. You must have fertilized well, They looked so healthy.
It's about time to start thinking planting again.

Are Lima beans perennials? I planted some outside last season, and I had one inside for around 7 years. Was this just luck, or are they actually perennials? The outdoor planted ones died.

Cando--thank you. I think the drip irrigation was more important than the fertilizing.

I also had fun with combining some different pink annuals....this one had angelonia, petunias, and some pink/red foliage.

Mom remember me? I have three goldens may have been four when we met. Here is an example of a drip system and fertilazation.

Holly Mackerel! Are those wave petunias? I've been dying to grow some of those but they aren't around much in my neck of the woods--just the regular petunias. I've got myself convinced to mail order some. Last year was such a gardening bust that I think I have carry over garden lust in addition to my regular winter garden lust.

Those onions look great, eweed. What do you use for fertilizer for the onions?

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Terri the pets are ez wave and the onion fertilizer is triple potasium in the row at planting and when you see the onions start to grow side dress with ammonia sulfate and repete every two weeks untill you see the onions begin to swell then stop. The other thing is to not let them dry out. Watering is best done with drip hoses or if overhead do it early in the day so they can dry off before dark.

Why thank you very much!

Hi, eweed!!! Long time no "see", but of course I remember you. Hope your golden babies are well.....

Those are awesome onions and petunias. Holy cow! I don't think I fertilized mine nearly enough (taking notes from eweed for this spring.....)
