LET'S GET CRAFTING....5th Annual christmas craft workshop

Mountain View, CA(Zone 9b)

Hi, all.
Hoping to paint soon... Lots going on here, so my husband hasn't had a chance to help with the painting yet. Hoping for time Sunday or Monday evening. In the meantime, I'm enjoying the scent of the candles!

Debbie, it turned out to be beautiful...bet those girls of your would like one??
Are you pleased with the outcome?

Just downstairs packaging up 10 for gifts for friends and neighbors ..am hoping one evening to go out and deliver them..need few plates of cookies so need to those before I play Santa!

Lyndonville, NY

Betty, ones for the girls are in the works. Carries will say "Faith" and Jeanna "Believe".
DH needs to bring the litte saw home from work to cut the holes.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Am sure the girls will love getting something homemade from both of you!

Lyndonville, NY

Well, I told DH I wasn't making one for them....I am not crafty. In all his twinkley-eyed humor he said "Listen, all the times they went to camp and brought us home some horrific project they made and we displayed for years in the rooms.....its payback time". Not so sure that was a good thing...but got a chuckle.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Omg..I'm so laughing..and don't short yourself, you are crafty...lol

Pacifica, CA

yaaay debbie i think it turned out beautiful good job

Victoria Harbour, ON

Packaging all of mine, hoping to deliver one night this week to some neighbors, one less thing I'll have to worry about during Christmas weekend..beside, they can enjoy burning the candles

Lyndonville, NY

Betty, the ones for the girls....I kind of stumbled onto a great find at Walmart in the holiday section. They had a set of three votives....and they each had individual wreaths around them. Have a bit of glitz on them....so got a red set and a ivory set. I can't wait to see how they look.

Glenview, IL

Ohhhh, Debbie, I soooo agree, your candle turned out just beautiful!!

LOL, on what your DH said about the kids gift...hahaha, toioche(sp?)

Guess What Betty? Sabrina has decided, now she wants to make one for her Grandma!! LOL so DH got to get busy, said he has some nice wood.
I said, geesh the first time in ever workshops i only ordered one!!

Lyndonville, NY

Judy, DH took me to Home depot for wood. We got a 4 X 4 "beam" and he is using that. Wants me to make one for neighbors too....Oh joy! I now have four to do....and there is a shortage of votives out there!

Victoria Harbour, ON

Debbie, at hobby lobby they had pkgs of glass voltives filled with candles wax..think for $10.00 I got a box that allowed me to do 3 pieces

The ones like we have are at Joann's ..$1.29 then add $1.50 a candle so go to Michael or hobby lobby and I'm sure you will find something reasonable..maybe even $$$ store.

The wood piece I had planned eecially for you so much more costly than what a 4 x 4 wold be..I'm sure they will look as good if not more primitive

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

These are turning out great. I'm gonna have to try and find everything and do one for myself, may even do paybacks to the kids too. HA! Someone or Betty can you point me in the right direction of the type of wood and everything you used. I know I have the gold paint and the black, the crackle and most everything else but wood and graphite. Did you use a wood stain for the top coat? Can probably print out the wording with daughters graphic design programs and mac. Did you rout out the holes for the votives? Think I have a big enough bit for that, won't have to go but about a quarter of an inch deep, Right?.

Lyndonville, NY

I didn't use the graphite....I used a stencil my DH made for me. Just printed the word size I wanted on "sticker paper" and stuck that to a think piece of cardboard. THEN used an exacto knife and cut it out. Use a "dabber" to put the paint inside the word.

I didn't have the tint Betty used....so I used a "coffee bean" color...and add just a touch of brick red...mixed it really well. Just realized I forgot to get my "crackle" at the store! Grrr!

Oh, and the wood I have is pine.

(thunder)Wildwood, FL(Zone 9a)

Robyn, yes the holes are routed, I'd guess more like 1/2 inch deep. top color was a mix of a few different brown paints, to give that "aged" look....many colors would work..

Debbie, Your candle holder came out gorgeous!!! you need to be nicer to yourself!!!

maybe after a nap, I will paint my black on....can't take to much energy just for that??? I am "sick" of sitting in bed!!! :(

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Robyn, the wood is painted solid black, let dry, paint on the crackle, let that dry, then paint the yellow/gold color. Let that dry, then do your wording, after that is dry the top color is a pretty brown paint, diluted with water. Brush on and quickly wipe off with a damp paper towel to get your desired affect.

Victoria Harbour, ON

piece if you have a woodworker is as follows:

wood candle holder 12" long x 2 1/2 "wide x 3 1/2" tall
acrylic put over the black is a straw yellow

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

Thanks LK, Thunder and Debbie.

I checked and I have everything but new wood and graphite, which I need to get for a few other projects I want to get done before spring. I do have several pieces of aged 4x4's, they look like pine. That should work and I can have the neighbor cut it down to size. Where is it Betty has the length written down. Eyeballing it from the picture looks to be about 12 inches.

Can't wait to see everyones done. I love watching you all doing this one. I probably would have been in on this one if it wasn't for DG being so hard and long to load. I use both IE and Firefox, it is the only site I have trouble bringing up so I got so frustrated with it, I wouldn't get on for long periods of time and I'm talking days and weeks at a time. But because I keep missing out on everything I decided just to sit back, relax and wait for it to load.

Think I'll have my DD look at it this weekend and see if she can figure it out.

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

Cross posted, thanks Betty, I will look to see if I have that yellow, think I do. Do believe I have that size wood too. Have to wait for it to stop raining so I can go out to the shed and look at the wood again.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Best of luck..these girls are terrific and helping out if I'm not around..you will have to show us

I used a forsener bit ..works great

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

Thanks, I think that's the one I have, whatever it's called I know it will work to rout it out.

All we have left to do now is to put on the polyurethane. Betty, he really did try with the letters but Grammy finished them for him. He really liked doing these.
He is sending you wishes for the best Christmas ever. Thank you my friend once again. You have made a special time for my grandson and I.

Hi, all.
Sounds like everyone's been having fun with their projects :)
Turned out to be busier than I thought this week... But we now have some sponge paint brushes. My husband picked them up for me this evening. Getting closer to getting to work on my project, too :) Hoping for Saturday... Meanwhile, still enjoying candle scent :)

Barb, that is very pretty! I have already lit mine, and they smell so good!

Pacifica, CA

wow barb beautiful !

(Barb) Manchester, NH(Zone 5a)

Thanks ladies. I just realized I was supposed to only put the tint on the top and bottom. Sean and I both ran it across the whole piece. But it still looks okay I think.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Is beautiful..Sean was right, was to be as your turned out..now see who is the crafter. Lol

Glenview, IL

lol, finally catching up

Oh Barbara!!

Your's turned out so Beautiful!!

Lyndonville, NY

I did one for youngest DD...who really isn't into the country/primative looks. I painted heres all "metalic" black which had sparkels in it. Did the front panel deep red with the black streaking thru. Then Did the wording in a red metalic with glitter mixed in that said "Dream". When dried I did a silver wash over it. She really likes it. I have to get the pictures loaded....but with computer issues, might be a bit.

Carries said "Faith" and Jeannas was "Believe" like mine.

Glenview, IL

Oh Debbie!!
That sounds wonderful, will look forward to seeing. So glad she liked it.

(Barb) Manchester, NH(Zone 5a)

You really are more clever than you give yourself credit for Deb. That sounds like it is beautiful. Hope you get the computer issues solved soon.
