Here's a little smithiantha that has just started blooming.
Marry christmas everyone!

That's just beautiful! Love the buttery yellow! :)
Smithianthas grow well but won't flower well for me because their growth cycle and the weather here in Chicago don't seem to be compatible... LOL
zozzl, that is one pretty smithiantha!
I don't have any of those yet. LOL
Have to master growing sinningia before I venture out into others. So far I'm going good.
Smithianthas aren't hard to grow. They usually are off to a late start (rhizomes sprout approximately in May) but then grow very quickly. Give them bright light, no sun, constant moisture and put the rhizomes in a quite large pot because the plants can get pretty tall and top heavy. Blooming season starts in late Summer to early Fall and can go on through Winter, depending on the species/hybrid.
Ohhhh I like that Kohleria 'Jester' as well as Kohleria 'Jardin De Monet'. I might have to give those a try.
Both 'Jester' and 'HCY's Jardin De Monet' are prolific rhizome makers. As soon as the plants slow down, I'll get to harvesting rhizomes. About mid to late March, I can send you some rhozomes depending on the weather.
Kohlerias should be pretty easy to grow outdoors in Southern Florida. At least they are worth giving them a try as a bedding plant. They will most likely need protection from midday sun and definitely will need plenty of water but should othwerwise not make too many problems.
Another shot of 'HCY's Jardin De Monet'. This plant is so tall and top heavy that I had to tie it to my shelf... What's in the picture is the top tier and the plant is slightly leaning. This is a BIG and TALL Kohleria, measuring 36" and it's still growing little by little as new buds mature...
Smithianthas are so easy to grow. You can grow them along side your AVs and they have very attractive leaves. Very easy to propagate also.
Merry Christmas to all my fellow gessie addicts!
And Smithiantha rhizomes just look so cool. :)
A good way to get a lot of plants out of one rhizome, and also to break the dormancy of a rhizome, is to simply pluck the scales off, put them on top of some mix and then just treat them like you would treat seeds.
If you start early in the year, you'll have a ton of blooming size plants in only one season.
Also, in some Kohlerias with mottled leaves ('Texas Rainbow' would be an example), only propagation by scales will pretty much guarantee you to keep the mottled foliage going.
Wishing everyone a blessed Christmas and wonderful New Year!!

I forgot the picture

Oh, that's so cool, Jan!
You are very welcome!

Just repotted a baby of Midget Valentine. It was so badly suckered that I thought at first it was a trailer! Has anyone grown this one before? Too embarrassed to take a pic of it after I took the suckers off . . .

Love that Sinningia !!! Soo many spots and the color contrast...adds to the wishlist. You people are no help :( So much for controlling the urge to buy more.
Well, Roly, I have two pods ripening right now and there's also a good possibility for cuttings in the Spring Round Robin...
They are very easy to grow from seed and are usually easy growers and profuse bloomers. So, let me know if you are interested in seeds. If the pods play along nice, that is, of course... :)
Gotta do my daily dose of enabling here... LOL
Olaf
I don't think that I'll be doing the Round Robin. I still don't have the rooting of leaves down. I tried a couple of times with about 97% failure. But if you see any AVs that you'll like some leaves of just let me know and I'll send them to you come Spring. Now when are we having the the Spring Bingo Game ???
I'm sure that I can send you some kind of "Care Package" with or without the Round Robin... :)
That S. guttata is gorgeous, I love the spots. I'll put that on my list with Amizade :)
I have two pods ripening on my S. guttata. If they make it, you are welcome to have some. :)
