Would it be okay now to move a two year old Crimison King Maple and a Japanesee maple. I need to move one because its blocking my view when I go to get my boat out. The other one is to close to the house and needs moved and is hard to mow around where I got it.
Transplanting Crimison King Maple.
I'm not sure of your zone or how cold your winters are etc, but a general rule for trees / c
shrubs is to either move or plant new plants between October to March as the soil is still not frozen and the trees have gone to sleep for winter therefore will have lost most foliage naturally rather than because they were shocked by digging them up.
Best to prepare the new site first and dig in any manures, fertilisers etc, then dig up the plant / tree by making a cut all around the root area and trying to take as much of the soil containing the roots as possible, once you have made the cut in the soil, you then go back around this cut digging deeper down into the under soil, you may need someone else to help IF the trees have got quite big, it helps if someone can gently tug the tree to the side while you try to gut through the soil under the roots, then they try gently to rock the root ball loose / free, place the root-ball onto an old sack or large polythene square to help carry the tree to the new prepared hole, the hole should be much deeper and wider than what you dug out, as you put the tree into the new area, you should shake the tree gently so the backfilled soil gets way down to the roots and no air pockets are left, as you backfill the hole, use the toe or your shoe to gently press the soil down again to make sure no pockets are left,
I always use a juice bottle or two to insert into the planting hole for trees / large shrubs
I cut the bottom off the plastic bottles, insert them into the holes neck end down, do this as you backfill so you have a little sticking out the soil then when you water, you fill the bottles up a couple of times and this gets water way down to the roots where it is needed especially come spring / summer where new or moved plants get stressed from lack of water at their roots.
This kind of bottle watering meant you can always give a liquid feed when needed.
Good luck, WeeNel.
Okay thankyou I might move it soon.
