DAILY BIRD PICS VOL # 421

South Hamilton, MA

Burd we have gained from all of your pictures. I have seen birds which I have never seen before. Unless we go to the coast we don't see 'shore birds' & certainly would not see many that you have pictured.

Lakeview, OH

What irisMA said is true, I have never been to the coast so I have never seen a lot of the birds you have seen. We don't go anywhere anymore, not a reliable vehicle and no money, so that kind of puts a stop to any adventures. By the way, missed the orientation Monday, the office sent me to the wrong place, but good news, they are having another one next week and I can go to that one and soon I will be working again, which means I can get some more suet for our woodpeckers. Something funny happened yesterday, I was watching out the monitor for my camera that is out front and saw a squirrel trying to figure out how to get into the round feeder to get the corn chex, he climbed down the lattice and tried a little, got fed up and left! I am so glad my hubby got that kind, they can't chew through metal and they can't get to the plastic. It is one of the most perfect ones you can get, although it is a burger to clean. I think since it rained on it yesterday, I am going to empty it out and put some seeds in it, the sparrows won't even eat corn chex, I did not think I could find ANYTHING they would not eat, but I did.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Fab. pics. Burd, I too am thankful for many blessings and the pleasure of sharing such joy with some of the most loving people in the world, right here at DG.

Yup...so thankful for DG and this Bird Watching forum. Have learned tons, enjoy all the wonderful photos and have made some wonderful friends that are a part of my daily life now that I never would have had the chance to meet otherwise.

Lakeview, OH

I emptied out the feeder and cleaned it out, I dried it completely and only put ONE cup of seeds in it. They still can find other natural foods, but I dumped the corn chex because most of it was wet. And nothing was eating it anyway

I had a thrill after lunch. Saw what I thought was a huge piece of plastic blow into a tree & then realized it was a hawk. It sat there for about 10 minutes then dove to the ground so realized when i saw the tail that it was a redtail. I hope it got a chipmunk, we are overun with them. We usually see they flying in the summer.

Such a wonderful thread this is..thanks for the beautiful start Linth. It is always a pleasure to view your gorgeous images.

I have to agree that this is a very friendly community and I have always felt welcomed since day one.

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving and don't get too stuffed...keep sharing your great pics everyone!

Don't have anything new but ran across this pic of a Great-crested Flycatcher taken through my kitchen window last summer.

Burd, this holiday seems to be the perfect time to tell you and everyone else thank you for all the beautiful photos. It's always so thrilling to come here and see all the birds across the country. And everyone has always been so friendly and helpful in teaching me how to take the best photos that I can. You're all the "best"!

Burd, I especially love seeing Elvis every single time, another beautiful photo of him. Loved the merganser pictures and that tarp makes the perfect background for your downy. Congrats on the bbs too.

Lily, great pictures of your ducks and egret.

Teddi, glad you'll again be working. I hope you'll enjoy your job.

Rose, your flycatcher sure is beautiful.

Here's one of my Brewer's Blackbirds.

Here's a photo showing part of our deck's feeding stations. You can see my Brewer's Blackbirds are the first birds to arrive every morning after I've stuffed peanut butter and peanuts in all the logs.

This House Finch sure was stuffing in the berries.

I did not get a pic of him, but I did see the male red-bellied woodpecker eating at the upside down feeder. I also got a pic of our Nuthatches, they are so neat when they hang upside down down and look at you. Ours certainly is not scared of us. The sparrows have cleaned out the round feeder again, that is why we did not put a lot in it. I have a lot of corn chex on the ground and I missed a opportunity to get a squirrel drinking from the bird bath! The moment I went into the house the squirrel found out about the chex on the platform feeder and chowed down.

Black-capped Chickadee with a deformed beak. This little fellow has a great deal of difficulty feeding. I belive it is surviving almost entirely on the gobs of peanut butter, I have been putting out.

How do you put the gobs of peanut butter out? Do you have something special you bought or made to put it on?

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Great pic. there Gary. I'm glad the BCC can rely on your TLC. It has been so windy here, I didn't see many birds in the garden. Duc, love your set up in the back deck. Give me an idea to attract more birds into the backyard.

I just slap a big gob of peanut, on any handy object. Here is some on a frozen sunflower, near bird feeders.

Oh that is a shame.

Can you get it tame enough to catch and take to a vet for bill trimming?

That is a interesting idea, do you think I could nail a small board on the tree and put some peanut butter on it? Maybe stick some bird seed or something else on the pb?

Lakeview, OH

Or maybe do with peanut butter what they do with suet, get two boards, put peanut butter in the middle and screw the two boards together, the squirrels can't get them but the birds can. Or is that a stupid idea?

Norwalk, OH(Zone 5a)

Ditto on ducbucln's comment...very informative & wonderfully helpful people here & awesome bird photos!!!!
Wishing you all a very Happy Thanksgiving!
Another lifer for me today! WooHoo!!!

Gary, would be great if you could get that little guy to have the beak trimmed.

Great lifer Ladi!! We had a Cooper's visit today along with 3 deer in the back yard this morning!

Is it possible to put peanut butter sandwiches in a upside down suet cake feeder, I think I read that one of the members here tried it and the woodpeckers went crazy, is it too soft for them and can you freeze the sandwiches to make them harder?

PERTH, Australia

Wonderful shots, everyone.

I am in complete agreement about the friendly, supportive and sharing group which is the bird watching forum. I also have formed enduring friendships. Good for you for voicing what I think a lot of us feel, Burd.

Well stated Margaret. Happy Thanksgiving to one and all. Thanks to OldNed, now I've learned that this is an adult Red-shouldered Hawk.

Teddy I'm glad that feeder is attracting birds for you.

Gras, that little dee is very lucky to have people like you to feed it. Poor little baby, it's amazing that it has survived.

Ladi, congrats on the lifer. Hope it doesn't stick around forever like mine seems to be doing.

Nanny, glad you're seeing deer too.

Mrs Ed, your poor little baby sure could use some of that bill.

Lily, your hawk is beautiful.

My "Stubbie" (Brewer's Blackbird) could also use some of that excess bill. He's been here at my feeders for at least 3 years and seems to have adapted without his longer bill.

Speaking of hawks, here's my sharp-shinned that's been here for several days now. Sure cuts down on buying seed for the feeders.

If I put a regular suet cake feeder on the cottonwood tree and put hot pepper suet in it, will the pileated woodpecker and the Northern flicker eat out of it?

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

What an amazing assortment of photos. You guys are doing a great job on your shots. I so enjoyed looking at them all.

Thanks for the link to the contest photos, Margaret

Loving the hawks Lily and duc!! Amazing that you can get so close to yours duc! Wish we would get another Sharpie . I loved seeing the one we used to have around the house.

Beautiful warbler burn...nice to see you posting again!

Teddy...just try it and see if it works.....

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Teddy, I was told that Pileated Woodpeckers prefer the wooded area. They rarely seen where I'm for instance for we've lot of open spaces being near the water. I recently saw Northern Flickers going after my dogwood berries, but they have not found my suet feeders. My friends who live in the woods get to see Pileated Woodpeckers , where as I have not seen one near my house ever.

Duc, fabulous shots of the Sharp Shinned Hawk, love the Spotted Towhee giving you the look. lol Burn, love that Parula. The Crows, ours keep the Hawks away if they spotted them from a distance. They come in a small group and drove away the predatorial big birds.

I saw some Red-winged Blackbirds and Starlings in a huge flock. They were just passing by and didn't hang around for long.
