Feijoa

Orlando, FL(Zone 9b)

hello. does anyone have any experience/knowledge they would like to share about feijoas? any advice is welcome. im really hoping someone has tasted it, so that i can know if i should bother growing it or not. i wouldnt want to grow unpleasant fruit

Hi, sorry but i don't have anything good to say about them. I have a huge tree in the driveway and the best thing I can say about it is.....it's big! :) Don't know anybody that eats more than a couple. 100s of pounds just fall, rot and stain the driveway each year. I would remove it and plant more loquats but it's huge, well established and easy to care for. Plus it would cost a small fortune to remove it.

Hopefully somebody will have a more favorable experience with them. I just find the taste offensive.....strong perfume-like flavor and scent. Not a fan of the gritty texture either.

thanks for your input, it sounds like a ....heavenly fruit lol. i decided to ask for personal things on it. websites just describe fruits in a hard to imagine way. i understand its a taste that theyre describing but every description sounds good.
sounds like it might just end up being a nuisance. and i dislike gritty textured fruit.a website said its like a pear, which i like. but gritty, i cant stand.
thanks again :) if you grow any other fruits that you would like to tell me about, please dont hesitate :)

Oh, see I don't like pears mainly because of the grittiness. But I would eat 100 of them before I'd eat another Pineapple Guava :)

I just went to a few sites and read some flavor descriptions. "Its flavor is reminiscent of pineapple, quince and lemon, with a hint of eucalyptus." Sounds yummy.....but it's not lol Now, I don't want to say not to grow it because what if you try one later on and love it? You would curse me for life! I just have never heard....."Dang, I'm craving a Feijoa" or "Can't wait until until they ripen".

If I were you, I would think about Loquats. Underrated, very tasty fruit. They should do good in your area.

lol! i appreciate your humor :) im actually i pear person. but im thinking that the flavor profile of the guava is a little overwhelming. theres just so much fruits that can grow in zones like ours, that its hard to choose. - ive actually tried loquat! a relative has a tree here. it sounds weird but- i like them unripe :p when theyre green and real bitter lol. the reason why i didnt want one is because i saw how much fruit is produced eventually. and the mess/pests. and when i did try a ripe one, i was greeted by a most repulsive gift.....a single squirming worm, nearly threw up. never tried a ripe one again!
i was thinking of pomegranate but it seems they prefer a ''mediterranean" climate. is that the climate youre in?

If you're a pear person....grow pears! :)

A wormy loquat? That probably would ruin the flavor. But doubt that would keep me away from growing them. Gotta agree, they're good either ripe or unripe. Never had a bug bother mine, but the birds can be a minor nuisance with peck marks on the top fruits.

I have a pomegranate. But it's in the shady side of the yard, neighbor's trees have grown large over the years and now it rarely produces. It did give me a few this year, so I will plant a few of it's seeds in a better location. Felt bad for it....seems like it's asking for my help.

lol i would grow pears, but i dont want to take the risk. im the end of their hardiness here, so i dont want to have poor fruiting, you know? same with apples.
yeah i do know the mockingbirds and blue jays loveee loquats.
poor pomegranate, you dont want to move it? the problem with me is that the fruits i want have a chance of damage in winter, and losing its fruit/blossoms. starfruit and mango. two fruit trees i would love to have.
