Lantana Varieties

Gainesville, FL

I know there are several varities of Lantana but I can't find any that give me the description that I am looking for. I have Lantana planted around a tree in my yard. Some parts grow about 6 feet high. My neighbor has Lantana planted on her hillside. It is growing down the hillside but none of the plants are tall. Not even a foot high. What do I need to look for to get the ones that are low growing? Like a ground cover.

I have lantana imperial and it is low growing. It is also lavender/purple, all of the flowers. I have white lantana, properly montevidensis, and it is also low growing. Both are surrounding a palm I have, and they spread across the ground. When they run into the palm, they use the chinks between the frame to climb up it. I have three other cultivars, and they grow into bush shape. They are yellow flowered, red flowered, and then the common multi-colored flower.

Cultivars of Lantana camara (most of the red/orange/yellow/pink colored ones are this sort) tend to grow taller shrubbier. Cultivars of L. montevidensis (usually purple, sometimes white, and I think there's one or two yellow cultivars) are more sprawling and like a groundcover, so that's the one you want to look for. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/adv_search.php?searcher%5Bcommon%5D=&searcher%5Bfamily%5D=&searcher%5Bgenus%5D=lantana&searcher%5Bspecies%5D=montevidensis&searcher%5Bcultivar%5D=&searcher%5Bhybridizer%5D=&searcher%5Bgrex%5D=&search_prefs%5Bblank_cultivar%5D=&search_prefs%5Bsort_by%5D=rating&images_prefs=both&Search=Search There are more cultivars of L. camara so at least around here it tends to be a bit more common in garden centers, etc but L. montevidensis isn't that hard to find.
