My asiatic jasmine won't grow.

San Antonio, TX

The plant is a variation called Salsa. It is in a very Shaded area and gets morning sun only. It is kept well watered and fertilized. I live in the 9b zone where we have some hot summers and moderately cold winters. I wish to prepare the soil for next spring. The area I want to cover is about five feet square. The plant is growing close to the ground, but it will not cover well. It is very sparse and sends long runners in all directions. Any suggestions to help the plant grow to a better thickness?

Once All Jasmine got going they are normally just left to either climb or tumble, I would say you need to give the plant some form of support to allow air to flow through the greenery, lifting it up a bit from the soil will also let it have more light, this helps harden /ripen the stems and produce flower.
If you have only just recently planted you Jasmine, it perhaps needs more time to settle down and first priority for any plant is to try establish a good root system not flowers, don't over water or over feed, the soil should be rich with added manure / compost but well drained as you don't want the roots to sit in water.
The next part is when you have new side shoots, nip out the very growing tip and this will help the plant produce even more new side shoots, perhaps you type of Jasmine wont flower on new side shoots and only on last years wood, I don't know your species so maybe someone else can help with this part.
Good luck, WeeNel.

I thought I posted this morning but guess it didn't go through...I think it may not be getting enough sun. Plants that don't get enough sun will tend to be longer lankier as they stretch for the light. Also you may need to give them more time--I don't know how long you've had them, but if they've only been in the ground a year or two you may need to give them a little more time to fill out. WeeNel's pruning/pinching tips will also help, but if they're not getting enough light they may still not get as full as you'd like.

I have 3 varieties of Jasmine and are potted, they come in the fall. They get a lot of sun during summer. I also prune them in the fall.

I just give them miracle grow during summer.

I purchased the same varigate jasmine Salsa in June. It has been in full sun and well taken care of. Mine too is not growing very fast. I was hoping to propagate it, but seems as though it is a very slow growing plant.

Give it time--many perennial plants take a couple years to really get going. There's a saying "first year they sleep, second year they creep, third year they leap" which often holds true. Some things will get going faster than that, but I'm not at all surprised that something just planted in June hasn't taken off yet.

Thank for the encouragement, Ecrane.
