gurneys dwarf peach tree

Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I recently received tree from gurneys. Tree was snipped at trunk and offshoot was staked to make it main leader. Is this typical?

This is supposed to be semi dwarf. I think this may have been attempt to make standard into semi dwarf. I emailed them and "charlie" said this is how all are shipped.

I guess this is the scion that's grafted to the rootstock?

Hello,
Its hard to tell from the picture if your tree has been grafted or not. If it is a semi dwarf tree, it has to have been grafted. It is the rootstock that makes is a semi dwarf or dwarf tree. There is nothing wrong with a small tree like that, just remember is has a very small root system. When I ship out bareroot trees, they look something like the one in the picture. If you have any other questions about the tree, please let me know!
Best of luck,

While your tree will probably grow and eventually look okay it is not the standard in nursery stock production. It looks as if the main leader became to large to handle and therefore too large to ship. It was cut off and a water shoot was selected to become the main leader. Provided the shoot selected is above the graft it will grow the desired fruit.
