Palm Trees

Roslyn, United States

I love the streets in Florida and California lined with palm trees. Are there any species that can withstand NY winters that I can try to plant in my yard near my pool to make it look tropical?? Thanks.

Hi Joel, I have the same thoughts as you, these palms that line the roadside etc look so majestic and even on a dull day, you feel you are in a tropical wonderland especially when the branches sway in the breeze.
Like you we are unable to grow lots of those palms but here in UK there is an alternative that when mature, looks palm like, thats the Australian Cabbage Palm (Cordyline) either in green or bronze coloured, they are a lot hardier than palms in the cooler regions and can crow up to about 8-10 feet, they sometimes throw up a second stem from ground level and this can also look tropical when they grow.

The Chusan or Fan Palm (Trachycarpus) are one of the types that are in some areas hardier here Zone 5-6, but we get very strong salty winds roll off the sea so this can actually do more damage than frost.
This palm is very slow growing and is used as a specimen palm but, it does look good in the right setting, I have grown this palm in a large pot that we half sunk into the bed but brought it into the greenhouse end of October, I had this for about 8 years then the very year I thought it was going to be OK left outdoors, I lost it to the cold, snow and wet winter that at the time was unusual, I should have offered the horticultural fleece I am always advising others to use as a safety blanket but hey, do as I say not as I do is what some would say.
Hope this helps you out and you can find something as they are good looking plants in the right setting. Good Luck. WeeNel.
