Ok, I need some advice, after a wedding at the little chapel I run, the mother of the Bride gave me two large boston fern that they had used for the wedding. they are in 2 gallon pots and have been outside in very cool weather for about 6 days and nights. ( we are to get snow tonight). Can I cut them back and keep in a cool well lit room for the winter and bring them out in the spring and get them going again??????? temps will be in the 40-60 degrees and I will keep them watered, with plenty of light.
Boaton Ferns
If you have room to take inside, then do it, just remember these ferns like cool shaded NOT dark area, they also like a dampish atmosphere so you need to mist them as you will have them indoors in a drier place, don't sit ferns close to a cooling system or drying heated boiler /heater as the dry air will cause the foliage to dry out and turn brown.
If you have to leave outside, don't cut the foliage but let it die down as winter intended, IF you got such cold weather where you are that the plants would get frosted for long periods or frozen, then give them some protection by wrapping the plants in either horticultural fleece or give protection of a wall (place the plants against the most sheltered area of the house / garage wall, or just even placed in an open porch area would do. not sure about the Boston Fern but most ferns set seeds easily and spread about the garden when in the right position, the seeds are on the back of the leaves and if you turn the leaf over you will see tiny little brown dots all over the underside and IF you want more plants all you have to do is peg a leaf onto the top of a pot of compost that you have wet before hand and spray with water every few days.
Good luck. hope this gives you some confidence and you are able to keep your plants going for many years, even IF you grow them in the garden.
WeeNel.
