Slugs/Snails in the fall

Up until now I did not realize autumn was the time of year to go after slugs/snails. I thought early spring was slug/snail hunting season. I have an infestation (using the word in the strictist sense) of garden snails. I never had snails in my yard until the spring of 2010.
