hi i have a question i have been trying to grow squash for a couple of months now but without any luck the thing is my squash plants only grow to a small size with only about 3 or leaves on it and yet the plants have allready produced a whole heap of flowers which dont even produce fruit they just die
small squash plants
Are you planting your squash in the early spring? When the weather is warm. Squash do not like cool weather. The cool weather will stunt them.
Not sure of your climate, I do know that you just began spring. Could be you planted too early. You could also lack nutrients in the soil which is usually the problem. Phytophthora which is a long lived soil borne fungus can also give the results you indicate. http://www.growingproduce.com/gptv/?vid=342
i have a update, a couple of days ago i looked at all of my squash plants and picked off all of the flower buds and gave them a good drink of seasol fertilizer and now some of the plant have started getting new leaf growth hopefully things keep getting better i will upload a photo later
they might be male flowers. for some reason, squashes dont really time their female and male flowers to open at the same time. once the plants get bigger, though, the chance of opposite sex flowers opening at the same time increase. so wait and fertilize every 2-3 weeks or so if using a liquid fertilizer....and is it spring there?
