I bought the poison arrow vine last spring - 2010 - and brought it into the greenhouse. It was dead by this spring - it was a large plant and cost a lot of money, so I was very sad that it died, but, oh well - ya grow some ok and you lose some - it's part of the game!

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

Prita/Kay, I think I'll have to look for the Poison Arrow vine....that is wayyyyyyyyyyyyy cool !!.
I wish I had taken my camera out AND had time to take pics...Passi Nephrodes is showing off, I'm away from the farm tomorrow, but maybe Sunday she will still be showing off and I can grab some pics. Spent most of the day trying to move a few things that wouldn't care for the mid 40's we are supposed to get tonight. Kay I bet you have a frost in the AM. Grrrrr, I want it to start acting link FL again ! Too soon, to be this cool, and of course we are supposed to bounce back to the 80's by mid week. It's the do ya bring em in or let em sit game.

Both!

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

Martha, I've spend a big share of today moving plants. I put plastic over a kid's swing set frame and put a bunch of plants in there. I also situated some pots of plants in an alcove on the SW corner of my house, which is brick, so should remain fairly warm - fingers crossed here. The greenhouse is shoved full, as is the Florida room. It seems like prayer is in order!

Sarasota, FL(Zone 9b)

Rita, those are very nice, clever plant hangers, where'd you get them?

Your Kopsia Fruticosa look like they might be related to plumeria - very pretty! My garden is in limbo right now as well, as to flowers. The tropical divas are stopping, and the winter annuals haven't started yet.

It may get down below 50 tonight even down here, sadly. I'm rousting out the frost cloth to keep my tomatoes warm - they've got flowers and little fruits on them. Covered the brugs, too as they've all got buds and flowers starting to open.

Good Morning everyone,
Spent a good part of yesterday moving more plants, mostly trying to protect them. I've got to get another GH. I have ordered one and I will let you all know how it works out. May be just the thing for some of you.

Rita,
You know I am so envious of your plants, I am guessing the first pic is an anthurium (which one)? Are the leaves as big as they look? LOVE the Poison vine...where did you get that? I also like the pot holders...me and Elaine want some, so please let us know where you purchased them from. Never thought of mounting them in the GH. I have about 6 that are huge and they need repotting. Could I do it now? They take up so much room, if I mounted them that would free up some space.

Thank the Lord, we may be finished with the house (inside) by the end of next week. Granite coming Monday and then painters, plumbers, and electrician. Pouring all concrete (driveway, etc.) Tuesday and hopefully the irrigation will be installed middle week.

Elaine, LOVE that brome...do you know the name?

Sarasota, FL(Zone 9b)

Paula, I got it at Tropiflora's plant festival and lost the tag on the way home. I've either got to find the tag in my car (no easy feat) or wait until it puts up a bloom and send a picture to somebody at Tropiflora for ID. Will let you know.

Here's last year's Salvia 'Hot Lips' tentatively putting out some more blooms. I've got to cut it back and fertilize . . . so much to do!

Elaine,
I have Hot Lips also. Planted it about 3 years ago on the side of my GH and the weeds took over. I thought I had lost it, but when I was pulling weeds and cleaning up the other day so they could move my GH. There she was with 3 blooms on her...very scraggly, but alive. I promptly dug her up and potted her in a pot. I'm going to keep it in the GH for the winter and make sure she survives, because I haven't seen another one to buy since I got that one.

Sarasota, FL(Zone 9b)

I got 3 starts of 'Hot lips' from Select Seeds early last spring but they're currently sold out. They bloomed like mad things until about June, took a break - like a lot of the temperate perennials do - over the summer and are now coming on again. The peach Agastache I had planted next to them didn't make it through the summer, sadly. It smelled really great.

I had an agastache for years and it pooped out this past summer also. The heat was a killer this year, the plant just melted.

Winter Springs, FL(Zone 9b)

dyzzy thanks for the advice on the Brugs...I will wait now before putting anything in the ground..especially since the past two nights dipped to upper 40's. I thought my Dad might know someone with some, but he said he didn't.
We had to finally chop our orange tree down after having it well over 20 years. We tried everything but it was gone. Now DH is putting in a patio there with a built in fire pit and I'll have a nice area behind it to put in more plants...thinking Brugs will look great in the corner.

prita, that poison arrow vine is really an awesome looking plant.

Dyzzy, I have the hot lips salvia, and they never bloomed this year, they are still there but it is strange they didn't bloom. I have lots of salvia that does great in my yard.

I had a lower branch come out on my Mexican sunflower tree...but still had to climb on a chair, pull down a branch to photograph the top of the flower. Bees and butterflies are all over this thing...I love laying in my hammock and watching the show.

Great shot, Sherri. Those big swallowtails are awesome - I always expect to hear 'flhup, flhup, flhup' as they fly by. My Mex. sunflowers are blooming 12 ft. in the air, too.

My salvias took a rest in the summer, but are blooming again now. I've been gradually shearing them back to encourage new growth, and that's what seems to be working. You don't want to cut them back all at once. I'll shear one branch down, fertilize then wait a couple of weeks for new leaves before shearing the next. The flowers are on the new growth areas. They were in some shade through the summer, too. But now that the sun is lower, they're getting a lot more sun.

Sad about your orange tree, but they do have a sort of short life span, from what I understand. 20 to 25 years is about average and there's no rejuvenating them. Your brugs will be lovely near that new patio! Let us know if you want cuttings to get started. I have 4 different types, and Debra (joeswife) has many more.

I've got a huge clump of Salvia Hot Lips. Many of the Salvia's will slow down some in the summer. Hot Lips is one of those "cut N poke" plants. Super easy to root.

Hello Everyone!!
Thanks for the nice comments on the poison arrow vine. I found that plant at Zone 9 in Houston several years ago. I have not been successful at starting them from cuttings but will try again.

dyzzy, I found those plant hangers at Lowe's, they were marked down to $3.
I am a big Salvia fan. I lost my Hot lips this past summer but found replacements at Home Depot. Your agastache is very pretty, I had the same story as ardesia regarding those. Last summer was their third strike, I will find something else to replace them.

Sunkissed, thanks for sharing your perfect sunflower pictures!

GAgirl1066, right back at you! I will be happy when you get all settled in your new home and have time to post pictures of all those beautiful plants in your collection that I am envious of. lol
That is a noid Anthurium, the biggest leaf is a little over 1' from tip to tip.

mjsponies,
We took a road trip to the Texas Hill Country, where I stopped by my favorite nursery, Millers Tropicals. He has quite a collection of rare (to me) Hoyas. I purchased these 3 plants for $25. I could find information on the citrina and the globulosa but the third marker read H phochyelada'. You are our Hoya, "go to" person. Do you recognize that name, and what do you think about my choices? He had so many unusual Hoyas and with a dh waiting patiently in the car, I did not have time to go through them all. He does ship plants!!

Joeswife,I had to research your Cape honeysuckle, What a great color for this time of the year, when not much else is blooming. I will have to try one next spring. Brugs. blooming in your basement it must smell like heaven!

Rita, is that Antherium the right picture - it looks like a tropical I grow - can't remember the name at the moment. Oh, I remember - Brazilian Fire Spike.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Rita, that Cercestes mirabilis is beautiful.. I would just leave it in it's little pot and give it the same care you give all your prettys..

the cape honeysuckle is covered in blooms, and I know it is supposed to be outside.. but I am not gonna risk losing it..

I hope my firespikes all bloom sometime soon..

nanys revenge and desert rose, firespike and morning glory bush and giantum something .. can't remember it's name but it is a philo.. a really happy one, too..

I found a half price rex begoia, ( again) and a small banana croton ( okay, I will try) and a varigated large leafed pepperomia , ( second attempt) only this time I am changing the soil and dowsing them with bug spray.. all three plants for 6 bucks, wanted to buy the large hoya hanging basket, but since the one I have had for three years as not bloomed, I decided to wait.

meanwhile.. I will just have to keep bathing and cleaning these things..

Rita,
I saw Todd in late October when he was up here for Orctoberfest. I got a few Hoya's from him also. I'll D-mail you with info on the Hoya's there's some ID issues on a couple. Might want to pop them out of their pots and drill some extra holes in the pots. Keep them on the dry side during winter, and bright light but no sun for now. Some do like shade, but "most" like pretty bright light.
Where did you find you little Cecestis mirabilis...one that has been on my want list for a while. My Cape Honeysuckle is a blooming fiend right now. Boy do I need to get out and take some pictures.

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

Debra have you heard of using "Scrubbing Bubbles" on your plants ? I heard of that trick on another forum for Hoya's.

Huntersville, NC(Zone 7b)

Looks like a Philodendron verrucosum to me Rita.

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

Good morning, everyone! Martha, tell us about using Scrubbing Bubbles!!!

Sarasota, FL(Zone 9b)

Debra, on the crotons, mine seem to thrive on neglect. If I coddle them and grow lots of luscious new leaves, the bugs find them irresistible. Keep 'em on the dry side, in half shade until spring when you can put it outside, then go to town on fertilizer etc. It will jump up and thrive. Watch for scale and mealybugs down in the leaf sheaths.

The Scrubbing Bubbles sounds like a great idea. It's a shower cleaner spray that foams up when applied, so has more than just soap in it. I'd want to experiment on a small section of each plant first to see if they're sensitive.

Mj, when I went to Lowe's website to look for Rita's neat plant hangers, they have a really cool "Rope Hoya" on there that looked like something you'd love. http://www.lowes.com/pd_337244-25548-66B010146-20_0__?productId=3282164&Ntt=plant+hangers&pl=1¤tURL=%2Fpl__0__s%3FNtt%3Dplant%2Bhangers&facetInfo=

Rita, yes, that Philo. sure looks to be the gorgeous Melanochrysum x verrucosum and you know I also like Cercestis mirabilis. Mine finally died after it's third attempt at trying to rejuvenate itself this past Summer. I'll try it again sometime but in the meantime, keep me posted on how you do with yours. My Stylochaeton bogneri is still growing but it sure has been slow.

Debra, those are some nice looking Alocasias you showed.

Drew, someone gave me this Alocasia a few days ago and I'm not quite sure who it is. Is it Portora?

Huntersville, NC(Zone 7b)

Rachel can you get a shot of the Petioles fairly close up with a white back ground? I am not certain with the leaf shot.

That is a beautiful plant the Melanochrysum x verrucosum. I knew it had some Verrucosum heritage. Thanks for the heads up Rachel!
