cycad diseased

Cold Lake AB, Canada

My cycad plant that I just purchased last week at a big box store has funny white powder=like stuff on some of its leaves....is this a disease and if so how do I treat it. I have no pictures of this

Ayrshire Scotland, United Kingdom

It could be powdery mildew, but without a picture it is not really wise to give a definite answer, it could be salts that come from the soil, it could be the stem weeping, so as you can understand there are several answers but will only be one solution depending on what this white powder is.
Send a picture, tell us where the plant sits inside or outdoors is the plant close to a heat source etc, all these things would help get you an answer. OR take the plant back to where you bought it and ask them if other plants have came back suffering from the white powdery stuff. These plants are tropical and would want to be misted with Luke warm water at least once a week but don't do this till you know what the problem is or you could add to them.
Good luck, WeeNel.

It's not uncommon for large shipments or groups of plants to be treated with fungicides that leave a powdery-looking residue on foliage before shipping. I'd be a little more concerned if it was something that appeared since you acquired it.

Can you post some pictures? Someone should be able to tell you if it's fungicide residue vs a real problem but it's hard to say for sure without seeing it. In my experience the big box stores don't really know much about caring for plants and I have seen things there with pest or disease problems, but it could just as easily be hard water or fungicide residue.
