Apples In Ireland! Advice needed on lot of things!

Co. Donegal, Ireland

Hey, I germinated 7 apple seedlings in the summer and planted them into pots where they sprouted around mid-august. They will remain inside in the winter but in the spring they will have to go out. Should they be in shade? My soil is very sandy, should they be in compost? It can be quite windy sometimes, should I use clear plastic tubes to protect them?

And most importantly-

They are rootstocks. I would like to start grafting nice tasting apples on, when should I start to do so?

Thanks :D

I looked through a couple of apple cultivars on PlantFiles, and most of them say full sun to partial shade, so they probably shouldn't go completely in the shade. It didn't say anything about soil type or when to graft, but you could probably find it somewhere on the web. As for the tubes--if the trees are thin and fragile it might be a good idea to use them as protection against the wind.

Hope this helps!

good job on growing the apple babies :) i agree with raykhona, protect from wind if they are still tiny. strong wind wouldnt help. - when it comes to the grafting...i dont have any personal advice. but! im thinking you would have to wait until theres enough of a trunk to support the graft. there would have to be enough trunk, enough leaves to support its own survival. - i hope this helps :p
