Multiple Photos?

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

I am wondering if we could have the ability to add more than one photo at a time to a thread we begin? It would be nice to add multiple photos to just one thread rather than making an individual post for each? Any possibility?

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

I would like that, too. Craig's List lets you post 4 to an ad, but no way to enlarge them.

Mackinaw, IL(Zone 5a)

The only way I know of to do that is to make a photo collage in your editing program before you upload them. It would sure be nice to be able to add more than one at a time!

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

I hope someone from Admin takes a look to see if we can do it. I know it is done on other sites without the use of the collage.

I d-mailed MiguelIB a few times starting March 8, 2010 asking if an improvement could be made so that we could load several photos at one time. He replied, and he assured me he would look into it as it was a "Great idea". He did not answer my last d-mail which was Jan. 3-2011. I don't think it's going to happen anytime soon!!

This feature is on our 'wish list'.
We've had some behind the scenes housekeeping, that put things like this on the back burner, but I'll see what kind of time table we've got for some 'perks'

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Thanks melody, I think we all deserve a few "perks"!!! We are devoted followers of DG and every once in a while it is nice to have a new improved feature????? hint, hint!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I think that would be a great feature! It seems this site has really not upgraded much at all for awhile now. I wonder why not? Though the search feature was sure upgraded awhile back and except for the fact I can never find a plant in PlantFiles using Searching PlantFiles feature, the Advanced search is great.

Is MiguelIB even still here? I have not seen him post in ages.

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

I have no idea who is running the show Kell??? I haven't been around much myself on DG, least not as much as I used to. It has been a long time since there have been any extra features on DG and am wondering if this is now as good as it gets?

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

We're going to have some new features, it's just taking some time to get their arms around everything here. I'll ask at this week's conference call what if multiple images could be worked in.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

kell and haighr,

MiguelIB is still on board, but his role is (and always has been) to have responsibility for several sites, not just DG.

I agree it would be awesome to be able to have multiple photos in one post, but unless the tech team surprises me when we talk to them on Wednesday, my guess is that this is an improvement that can only happen when we migrate the forums to a new platform, which will be a huge project.

Our current home-grown platform here is comfy and has done an admirable job for many years, and it's relatively stable. However, it doesn't lend itself to easy expansions or upgrades :-(

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Thanks for the info Admins. I think that we are overdue for some upgrades and believe that just a few tweeks might be just what the doctor ordered to keep folks around.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Agreed. Let's all remember that what looks like a simple tweak may be far more complicated than it appears on the surface (which could explain why these changes weren't made many years ago) and that improvements can mean some adjustments and changes for everyone :-)

A related question. Does Dave's Garden support progressive JPEGs? That is, a quick display of a blocky image, followed by the display of the final image? I realize that the uploaded JPEG would need to be a progressive JPEG.

At this point, our platform doesn't use progressive JPGs. I'll leave it to the tech team to determine if there's something to be gained by introducing it. The good news is, they do think the multiple photos is do-able on the current system, and they'll be working toward implementing it soon :-)

Terry,

"I'll leave it to the tech team to determine if there's something to be gained by introducing it."

There are still some users who don't have fast Internet access. That is particularly true for those who have to use dial-up connections for one reason or another.

Ironically, Dave's Garden's substitution of graphic thumbnails instead of inline graphics was adopted in order to deal with the download latency problem associated with inline graphics, and progressive JPEGs were created for exactly that situation -- to help alleviate user annoyance at slow graphics downloads. Supporting progressive JPEGs at Dave's Garden seems like a logical next step to me. I'll bet the tech team agrees with that.

Great to hear that the tech team is working on the multiple photo layout. Can't wait as it will make the site soooooo much better. I know it is done on other sites which makes posting much easier as you don't have to keep adding more and more threads to make sense of one post such as when trying to explain some project I am working on!
Be sure to let out a big holler when it is accomplished!

Indeed! We will be shouting with joy, too :-)

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Any updates? Sure would be a nice Christmas present, hint, hint!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

They are working on it - unlikely for Christmas, though :-)

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Thanks my friend!

Pasco, WA(Zone 6b)

I like this option of multiple photos in a post too. But only if the photo size isn't reduced. I love all the garden photos here and like to really be able to see the details in certain photos. ;o)

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

I am sure the tech folks will make them thumbnails that can be enlarged, right???

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I think (and this is just me thinking :-) the plan is to keep the thumbnails the same size they are now, but you will be able to load more pictures into a single post. Then you'll be able to click on each thumbnail to expand it. As far as I know, that's what they're working on.

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Thanks Terry.

Pasco, WA(Zone 6b)

Awesome,thanks!
Sherry

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

The multiple image option is now live...you can upload up to 5 images at once!

Woooohoooo!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Woot! Look at that. The impossible has become possible :-)

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Great. Thanks to all who made it possible.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Awesome! Fabulous new feature!

Mackinaw, IL(Zone 5a)

Thank you, to everyone who had a hand in making this a reality!

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

Tried it but won't load the page!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

It worked for me both times I tried it.

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

It finally loaded. Didn't go the second time so I gave up.
Comes up, Problem loading page.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Too-big photos, maybe?

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

How soon before this feature is available in the journal please?

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

And an a.m. question please...

Would there be a way we could conveniently view all five photos on someones' post by navigating through them rather than going back to the post and forward to the next photo repeatedly.

Pretty please???

After all, people post them for us to view... (on my knees pleading) Kristi

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Well how cool is this!!!!!!!!!!! Great job techs and Terry!
