I have three blueberry plants and they are healthy looking but no fruit yet. Does anyone know when they "should" bear fruit? They actually had some berries on them when I bought them maybe 6 months ago. Is the "season" start date coming up soon? (I hope?) Thanks for any help.
Blueberries In Florida
blueberries are delicious aren't they? in my ''gardening in florida month by month'' by tom maccubbin (a great resource since im from new york) it says that blueberries require an acidic soil, pH 4.5-5.2 so you might need to test your soil pH if you havent already. its something i usually ignore :p. but you can use a azalea/camellia fertilizer to help with acidity. -- also blueberries are supposed to flower in spring and be ready to harvest may-june, according to my book. and they might not produce well if there isn't enough cold during winter, like in apples and peaches. -- and after fruiting (it says no later than early august), it is a good idea to prune them to promote new growth later. --- i hope this helps you out.
Thank you! It was very helpful. I knew about using acidic fertilizer (I use HollyTone, which is good for plants that want acidic soil, not just hollies). When I prepped the holes the nursery gave instructions and I followed to the letter. I was just wonder when I would start seeing some fruit! I guess it's too soon yet -- spring! I planted these back at the beginning of summer; they were already a foot tall or more and had a FEW berries on them when I bought them. Then nothing, but they've grown and look very healthy and green so I guess next May-June I should have some berries. Hope so! Thanks again.
youre very welcome. its very nice of the nursery to provide information, some of them dont even care. im guessing those berries managed to grow on the plants in the nursery, or maybe they removed the others and just forgot those. -- so a quick question: are you able to grow coconuts in your yard? i know its not zoned but i always see them out there( cocoa, melbourne etc)
I don't know anything about coconuts or palms, sorry. Thanks again for your answer on the berries!
aw shoot. your welcome :)
