Dividing bulbs!

Rensselaer, NY

What is the proper way to divide Poinsettia bulb clumps! Or, actually any bulbs for that matter! In the Fall, after drying them out, or when and how to store them for the Winter in my area? Zone4/5

Ayrshire Scotland, United Kingdom

Poinsettia's are grown from either seeds sown while freshly gathered, or by cuttings April or May when they shoots are young and about 3/4 inches tall.
As for all other bulbs, it really depends on the type of bulb, tulips, Daffi's and all other spring flowering bulbs go in the soil autumn, planted 3 timed as deep as the size of the bulbs.
Lily and summer flowering bulbs are better planted early spring and second year flowers are better than the first year with all bulbs as the bulbs have had a time to get used to situation and climate, don't cut down the foliage of ANY bulbs as you need to let this die down naturally as this helps feed the bulb and they store this goodness for making next years flowers etc. at planting time I like to put a little Sand at the bottom of the planting holes to help with drainage but I live in a wet cooler climate and bulbs can rot if not given extra drainage.
There are lots of good books on bulbs and planting tips in the Libraries and book stores so, go in and take a note book with you for ideas and tips, also on this site there may be a forum on the subject too.
hope this helps you out some, Good luck. Weenel.
