Preparing Roses for winter

Havelock, Canada

Could someone please tell me how to go about protecting my roses for winter? I have a hybrid tea rose bush (Love Magic)
and an everblooming climbing rose (Red Fountain) that are both new to me this year. My hybrid rose is over 5 feet tall. The climbing rose is about 4 feet tall. I am in zone 5a. I have read about straw and twine. I am looking for straw in the area. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I usually wait til we get a frost and then pile dried shredded leaves around the crown of the hybrid teas (about 6-8 inches deep). Last year, I enclosed each rose bush with a short chicken wire fence, and piled the leaves inside that. After a hard frost, you can trim the canes a little, but not too much. For my climbing rose, I put leaves around the base (6-8" deep) and then wrap the entire plant with burlap, which I secure to the trellis. The burlap helps to keep the leaves around the base and protects the canes from the severe cold weather (I'm zone 5 also). A lot depends on the winter weather as well. Last year we had a lot of snow, so the plants were protected. The worst winter weather is very cold with little snow.
Hope this helps. Good luck!

Elijablue -Thanks for your awesome advice. I know the snow helps insulate but it needs more protection. Now I won't stress out about straw since I have chicken wire, leaves and some burlap. I will be good to go. We did get frost but it wasn't a hard frost.

Once again. Thanks for the advice. I really appreciate it.

Elaine:
You are welcome. Hopefully, we'll have enough snow cover this winter.
