Overwintering Martha Washington geranium

Wheaton, IL(Zone 5b)

I bought a beautiful Martha Washington geranium this spring and want to keep it for next year. However, I don't have room to bring the whole pot in. I have kept regular geraniums (not the MW) over the winter in a dormant state - out of the pot - in a cardboard box - in a cooler spot of my heated basement. Can the MW be treated the same way? I would hate to lose it. Weather is changing this week so I need to do something with it soon. (I'm zone 5) Any help is appreciated!

Found this info from one of the articles on here by Lee Anne Stark (threegardeners)
"The regals ('Martha Washington', etc.) need special care and cool temperatures to bloom. Regals are best if kept in their pots in a cool room for the winter."

Thanks for the info. After a lot of research, I decided to bring the whole plant in. I did do some root pruning and cut the branches back too. Just didn't want to take a chance on it dying over the winter. Hopefully, it'll survive in my basement under the lights!
