Anyone know of side by side research or trials to determine the best brands or products for seed tray media? I am growing lettuce in cells in trays with a Sunshine mix media but the have variable results. I get germination but the plants to not mature in a robust way... they stay leggy and spindly. Could be other factors unrelated to media like sunlight also. Not sure.

Best Seed Tray Mix?
Bernie - what comes to mind immediately when you say your plants stay leggy and spindly is that they ar not getting enough light.
Personally, I use 48" florescent tubes above my seedlings. I keep them turned on for sixteen hours each day, and position them just above the seedlings, close enough that they don't actually touch the leaves.
The least expensive 48" shop lights with cool white bulbs are all you will need.
I always think of Hawaii being warm all year round. If this is so, you should be able to start your seeds outdoors. I lived in South Florida for over 30 years, and always started seeds outdoors.
