Purple wandering jew temperature tolerance?

I have a southwest style home in southern Michigan and am trying to choose plants that can tolerate the harsh winters that we have yet still have a southwestern look to them. I've been told that Purple wandering jews cannot be planted outside in our zone. However I have recently noticed some in Ohio and some in Chicago that have been planted outdoors. How are they accomplishing this?
