What's the difference between these trees? Please Help!

What is the difference between a Royal Poinciana, Flamboyant and a Flame Tree? Are they all the same tree? And what is the name of the "family type" that the Royal Poinciana is in? I see a lot of trees that look as if they are in the family of that tree, of course they look different, but basically they have the type of leaf shape/structure. There are many of them in Florida and I would like to know more about them. Can some help?! Thank you :)

All of those common names you listed can be used to refer to Delonix regia http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/2755/ so I suspect that's the tree you're thinking of. However, common names in the US aren't standardized so there are likely other trees/shrubs that get called by some of those names so depending on what common names the people you're talking to you use, they may or may not all be talking about the same tree.

There are quite a lot of other plants in the same family so it's not surprising that you see things that look similar. Caesalpinia pulcherrima is one that I expect is fairly common in FL too: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/2247/ But there are also things like Jacaranda that have similar looking leaves to Delonix and others in that family but are in a completely different plant family: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1254/

Here are others in the Caesalpiniaceae family if you're interested: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/b/Caesalpiniaceae/none/none/cultivar/0/

Thank you for answering my post. Although now I have more questions then before. There are so many trees that look alike how can you tell the difference between them? I guess it takes years. There is one tree that looks like the Jacaranda but has seeds in the shape of a "C", the seeds are dark brown and about the size of a palm on ones hand. It grows purple flowers, actually they're starting to bloom now.
Some of the trees look almost exactly the same except for the color of the flower, so it throws me off sometimes. I have a lot to learn and I'm learning a lot from this website, it's very educational. I'm thinking of subscribing so I can really learn.
Well I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to help!

If you can take some pictures of the trees you're not sure about, there's an ID forum here where you can post them and someone will almost certainly know what they are. If you can get pictures of all parts of the tree (leaves, flowers, pods, shot of the whole tree) I can almost guarantee someone will recognize it. If you're missing some of those things I'd post it anyway but it can sometimes be a little trickier to ID just from leaves. Here's a link to the ID forum: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/plantid/all/

You're very welcome!

Sounds like Pride of Barbados (yet another name) which comes in various colors, though I didn't think purple was one of them.

You're right; Pride of Barbados (by which I assume you mean Caesalpinia pulcherrima) doesn't come in purple. There is a pink flowering cultivar, but it is very clearly pink, not even a purplish-pink.

Thank you to the both of you. I'm going to take a photo soon as I can.
