Planting a turk's cap

Holiday Lakes, TX

Hello. I live near Houston Texas and just bought a turk's cap at my local bird observatory. It came in a smallish pot and is about 3 feet tall and blooming. Should I plant it in the ground, or in a large pot? I don't have a bed ready to put it into - any suggestions? THANKS!

I take it you are referring to a Turks Cap Lily, is yes, I would leave it in the pot you have IF you don't have a bed ready for it, leave in a sheltered place, remember to water and at autumn slow down the watering and remove the dead foliage, you allow the foliage to die down naturally as this greenery dying down feeds the bulb for next year,OR re-pot it into a slightly larger pot with good compost and store as above till new growth next spring.
Do the re-pot once the flowers have wilted but while the greenery is dying down.
Next year IF you have a spot ready for it, add some blood/bone-meal for a feed, add this to the soil where you plant and it gives the bulb a boost and helps flowering, I like to plant lily bulbs slightly deeper than usual bulbs (usual is 3 times the size of bulb from tip to root) but with lily's I add a few more inches deeper and as I get lots of rain I add some sand/grit to the bottom of the hole.
Hope this is the right plant I have gone for, good luck. WeeNel.

Could also be Malvaviscus--it also goes by that common name. If you don't have a bed ready for it you can leave it in the pot it's in, or else if the pot is really too small and you think it'll be some time before you're ready to plant then you can pot it up into a little bit larger pot. It's better to wait for cooler weather before you plant it in the garden even if you do have a spot for it--planting in the garden is stressful for plants and doing it while it's hot out makes it harder for the plant.
