If you want to be a vegetable gardener but don't have the room, Benjamin Rush State Park is opening up plots of ground for you to grow your goodies! The park is at the NE Philadelphia/Bucks County border in PA. There are 308 plots, each meauring 30'x 30', each marked off and staked. There is a water source and a portajohn. I think they are charging a $10 fee this year. It use to be free but many people didn't keep up with their gardens or even show up, hence the fee now. Free compost and free seeds are also given by America the Beautiful in Washington, DC. I use to garden here years ago and I usually received about 40 packs of veggie seeds. It was a wonderful experience and a great start with vegetable gardening. I use to plant flowers also. If you are interested in a plot, you need to reserve one. Please email me and I'll give you the contact phone number to do so :)

Trish - Just had to say that this is great stuff. In England we call them allotments. What a wonderful way to grow your veggies and meet new friends.
I agree, Louisa..it's more like a gardener's social time. You meet new friends and learn so much. Some people have so much after harvesting for their family, friends and neighbors, that they donate the extra veggies to the Philabundance group. This group feeds fresh garden produce to the poor and hungry:)
